It is interesting to me symbolically how the lotus grows. We have the beauty showing on the outside yet the mud in which the lotus grows is how our minds often work. They are clouded by our attachments and how we define ourselves with them.

The lotus also symbolises the buddha himself. He was born among humans and yet he is not equals to the rest of the humans. Just like a lotus which grows in the mud and blooms away from the mud and does not touch water. just like buddha who has thrown away all the attachments.
As it happens I visited a botanic garden today and saw the "sacred lotus" plant with both blooms and seed cases, growing out of the murky bottom of the pond. To me it also seems an emblem of the unity of experience, reminding us to accept the full range of it.

In the eastern religions, the Lotus is associated with purity and beauty, which comes to the surface as a result of cleansing the mind and detaching one’s true Self from the mind.
