Funny/true story - "You should be a writer!"

I myself always have amazingly witty responses to things said in elevators. Of course, I have them when I'm at home, about two days later.

It did feel good, because it was true. I've wanted to be an author for beaucoup years. Finally, I could say that I was, since my novel had been out for a whole four weeks at that time. One month earlier, and I wouldn't have been able to say that.

Anyway... I was in a crowded elevator with my daughter and ex-husband. It was a friendly, chatty group. I said a few things that turned out to be rather clever, and one woman said, "You should be a writer." No kidding!
I almost died on the spot. My ex-husband said, "She is a writer!"
So the woman who said that followed me into the ladies restroom and asked me who I wrote for. Newspapers? Magazines? What?
So I told her I'd written a novel. She asked what it was called, because her mother-in-law is a voracious reader and is always looking for books. I told her it was a romance novel - sexually explicit. And she said, "Oh, good. My MIL loves those." So she wrote down the title and my name, etc... to buy the book for her MIL.
The moral of the story is... you never know when you might interest someone in your book. I just wished I'd had my author cards printed up; I've been meaning to do that, so I could hand her one (you know, book cover image on one side, contact details on the other). I think I'll get right on that.
