The Complete Stories and Poems
question
Any scary or just macabre?

I picked up Poe (for a steal!) thinking it was supposed to be scary. I seem to remember that it was supposed to be a big deal, but after reading just a couple (Telltale Heart, Annabelle Lea, House of Usher) I'm a bit disappointed from all the hype. Are there any in this volume that one would consider scary, like "sleep with the lights on" disturbing? Also, what was your favorite Poe and why?

Uncanny is what defines Poe's works. For scary stories, you may go for Hoffmann, Le Fanu, Blackwood, Ewers, James etc.
Of Poe, I'll suggest 'The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar'.
