Onion as the narrator

As a narrator Onion doesn't up play his roles, and in fact is quite humble. Do you think he really cared about the abolitionist movement, or was he being humble or did he just happen to be in the right place at the right time?

I think Onion was more interested in saving his own skin than in helping free the slaves. The question I found myself asking is was he a reliable narrator?
