For this month's read, let's go off the beaten path.

No zombies, no vampires, no werewolves.

We're looking for the "What the fark was that?" things that go bump in the night.

Shaun Horton | 324 comments Fangtooth was suggested last month. Seems to fit pretty well with this month's themes too.

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments The troop by Nick Cutter?

My public library should have that for me any day now.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Looked through my horror shelf for the books that seemed promising but I never got around to reading, and will just throw some titles out that you can pick and choose from, Jon.

The Lamplighters
Benjamin's Parasite
Elsewhere
Slob

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments Well, if we're looking for something a bit off the well-trodden path, how about this one?

Dawn (Xenogenesis, #1) by Octavia E. Butler
Dawn

That went off the beaten path and wandered into sci-fi.

Stick to horror.

The Ceremonies by T.E.D. Klein

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

This one seems apropos for being off the beaten path...

The Ruins by Scott B. Smith

message 18: by Mixofsunandcloud (new)

Mixofsunandcloud | 538 comments Annihilation but it might be too Sci Fi,
It but it might be too long for a group read and
John Dies at the End

I probably shouldn't argue against my own suggestions...

Nurse Nightmare | 59 comments Have Geek Love, John Dies at the End and The Ruins all on my TBR pile so I second those :)

Great choice.

message 22: by Chad (new)

Chad Lorion (goodreadscomcmichaellorion) Jon, Ceremonies is on of my favorites. Love Klein's writing style and subtlety. Would love to do that as a group read.

message 23: by S.R. (new)

S.R. (therosebride) | 10 comments I will second Geek Love and John Dies at the End since both are on my to read list.

What about The Fog by James Herbert? That definitely fits the criteria and I never did get around to finishing that one...

I found a h/c of this one in a used book sale! Would do a re-read of this one--it's been years since I read it, and I don't remember much about it now.

The Ruins was also a great read, IMO.

Angel Gelique (angelgelique) Here's one I've been dying to read...

message 42: by Walter (last edited Mar 01, 2014 06:57AM) (new)

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments Just took a look at the poll. It's showing that Geek Love is the winner for the March read.

I think you guys are going to enjoy this novel. I read it a long time ago when it came out in 1989; it got an excellent review in Locus, the magazine devoted to announcements and reviews of speculative fiction of all kinds: sf, fantasy, horror, and all the various offshoots and little cousins of same. Bought my copy after I read the review (it was only available in hardback at the time).

Kindle version is $9.99, but Amazon is showing used paperback, and even hardback, copies for less.

For anyone unfamiliar with the novel, here's the Amazon summary:

"Geek Love is the story of the Binewskis, a carny family whose mater- and paterfamilias set out–with the help of amphetamine, arsenic, and radioisotopes–to breed their own exhibit of human oddities. There’s Arturo the Aquaboy, who has flippers for limbs and a megalomaniac ambition worthy of Genghis Khan . . . Iphy and Elly, the lissome Siamese twins . . . albino hunchback Oly, and the outwardly normal Chick, whose mysterious gifts make him the family’s most precious–and dangerous–asset."

Shawn Deal | 27 comments How about WeaveWorld by Clive Barker. Definitely horror and definitely off the beaten path.
