Punk Fiction discussion

A thread for introducing yourself and greeting those who do. It's always a bit weird doing this when you know there's no-one else around to respond, but:

I'm Andrew, a voracious reader taking my first serious steps as a writer. I like genre fiction, particularly scifi, but my tastes range all the way from horror to literary fiction (whatever that is).

I’m Sarah. I’ve been a fantasy fan since I was a teenager and recently this has evolved into an interested for ‘punk’ fiction, particularly dieselpunk. I’m also very much into history and ethnography.

I’ve been writing fantasy fiction since I was a teen, and for the past four years I’ve been working to a dieselpunk project: a trilogy of novel, a ghost story set in Chicago in 1926. This is a project I truly love.
At the moment, I’m in the final stages of revision before posting the first novel through my online workshop.

Cool! What's the title of the novel?
I haven't read many steampunk stories - I'm more into dieselpunk, actually - but I like the feel of it. I like steampunk aesthetics, I'm a into steampunk jewellery making. Just a beginner, you know, but I really like it.

I am Roly, recently joined the group (well yesterday LOL) and I have been a reader of some sci-fi and fantasy over the years, mostly in book form I've only really been into history books. Most of my reading truthfully has been tons of comics and graphic novels by some great writers like Warren Ellis, Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore and those of a similar ilk.

I just purchased a Kindle and read Mysterious Benedict Society and now started Hard Luck Hank after searching for something that reminded me of the Shadowrun mobile game's atmosphere and vibe.

I am here to discuss and to be schooled on any new, or at least new to me, books that fall within that category of cyberpunk or anything that may pique my interest in that vicinity.

I know since I'm new to a lot of the punk genres, I was wondering if you could make a post with just a one or two line description of what each punk genre entails? I didn't even know there was more than just cyber and steam punk to be honest.

I know I could google it, but it would be a cool intro for other newbies, and also be cooler coming from someone who's obviously knowledgeable of all these punk genres. If you have time of course.

Hi Roly, welcome! I'm going to start a new thread in a minute for just this purpose. I've put up a whole bunch of dedicated threads for various ~punk genres, but most of them are just placeholders at the moment. In a few of them I've added an extra post, but in all honestly I'm yet to sample all the possibilities myself.

Awesome, I look forward to it. Appreciate the reply back. I'm almost done with this one book and I may be biased since its my type of punk but I could see Hard Luck Hank: Screw the Galaxy by Steven Campbell definitely making it into cinema, but I digress. :) Take care and cant wait to see the post whenever you have time and suggestions for new books to read.

Greetings, all. Brand new member here, approved by Andrew moments ago. I am a reader and writer of steampunk, though I suspect membership here will broaden my reading horizons a bit. I didn't join a 14-member club to market and spam, but I want to say this once, and I won't bring it up again: Obviously I have a page here on Goodreads, and those who want to see what sort of creature walks among them can visit my author site at http://steampunkjack.weebly.com. Between the Welcome page and my blog, there is a pretty good cross section of me and my activities in the genre there.

And that's the only time I'm going to mention that. I'm not here to pound my chest and talk about me, me, me! I'm interested in sharing ideas with you, you, you. To which end, I'm going to go look over the threads, and possibly offer some of my infinite (but sharply skewed!) wisdom.

Hello everyone!

My reading interest has steered me primarily to Dieselpunk although I'm open to other punk sub-genres. The 1920s to 1940s is a time period that intrigues me. I've published the first in a series of Dieselpunk novels but I won't mention the title, just letting you know I'm an author too.

In general, I find there is limited awareness of Dieselpunk as an emerging sub-genre of science fiction. There are more and more titles out there to be discovered and I'm sure this group will unearth them!

My name is Elvina Drake, but I would appreciated being called Elf. It's less typing for you, and I prefer it.

I am a huge fan of fantasy and sci-fi and the punk genres. I tried writing in the Steampunk genre a year and a half ago. I finished the book (more of a novella) and it turned out to be more Gearpunk, and the plot became more and more degenerate as the story went on.

However, I have thought of ways to make the story more true to the genre and improve the plot. I have further edits to make to the concept before I write and another book/book series to work on and finish first.

How come you're trying to ditch it? Anyway, click on the edit button near where it says "you are a member of this group". The page the edit button brings up has an option for leaving the group.

I'm in the middle of writing a novel that's a bit of a steampunk/non european based fantasy with a big dollop of comedy. I'm not too sure what genre it falls into yet, but I'm sure I'll find my niche eventually.

Hello! I'm Meg. Growing up with Final Fantasy and Baron Munchausen, I've been a steampunk enthusiast since I was a kid. I'd love to learn more about other punk genres. Is there a specific term for a steampunk technology genre that is more medieval than victorian? I'm a writer and I'm always looking to be as specific as possible in defining my work. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the reading recommendations that pop up here. Cheerio!

I posted a slew of otherpunk definitions elsewhere - I think they're mostly empty threads at the moment (we conform to the slow-posting mode of Goodreads group around here!).

Hi, I used to think I wrote technical thrillers until someone tapped me on the shoulder to tell me it's really cyberpunk, even if set in the not so distant future. I have a couple of series out there, each touching on that cyberpunk element, with a third on the way that will make it the main course.
