Geoff | 166 comments Along the liffying waters in the Washers of the Ford we reeders come across this word: "aleveen", or alevin, (How many aleveens had she in tool?) the term for a newly hatched salmon. Campbell kindly by footnote explains the salmon theme in FW (which now when I think on it is everywhere)- the importance of salmon in Irish myth and folklore- most importantly for HCE being that "the taste of the flesh of the great, wise Salmon" is where Finn MacCool acquired his Tooth of Knowledge. In this brief wiki article it is suggested that this Salmon might be one of the immortals, and thus "could be eaten and yet continue to live." Apropos of the infinite cycles and structural themes of the Wake. More on Finn MacCool and the Salmon:

"According to the story, an ordinary salmon ate nine hazelnuts that fell into the Well of Wisdom (aka Tobar Segais) from nine hazel trees that surrounded the well. By this act, the salmon gained all the world's knowledge. Moreover, the first person to eat of its flesh would, in turn, gain this knowledge."

And aren't Anna's 111 (and doesn't alevin sound a bit like "11") little riverine children pretty darn cute?

Scor'ing Ser&Dips with Finnegan is like shooting salmon on the Leix Leap.
