Remember the War Doctor? Is Peter Capaldi the Twelfth or the Thirteenth Doctor?

He's the first of the new Doctors, because we need to count the not-quite-regeneration that David Tennant's Doctor had that he sent into his spare hand.
Twelfth. And the 13th Doctor should be Rupert Grint or James (or Oliver) Phelps. He deserves to be a ginger.
Old post, sorry. Personally Conner, I don't think that he restarted his regeneration cycle. That would be going to far.
Yes, I agree. That's what the stuff coming out of the gap between the dimensions was. A new life cycle. The episode made it very clear.
SPOILERS!
Capaldi is the 12th "Doctor" (13TH face) War Doctor not identified as "Doctor" officially. Tennant Doctor partially regenerated (Stolen Earth/Journey's End) but didn't change his face/body until "The End of Time". Capaldi Doctor 1st of new cycle from Time Lords.

I consider him Doctor number 2.1, since he's the first Doctor of the Doctor's brand new set of regenerations.

On that page you've linked to it looks like they include the War Doctor as the Doctor. And there's every reason to think he is, as we saw Paul McGann's Doctor regenerate into him in The Night of the Doctor.

As far as USE OF REGENERATIONS/BODIES and energy used for such, he is a Doctor but as far as title The Doctor no. It was explained in "Day of the Doctor". Because of the time displacement whatever with War, 10 and 11 only 11 remembers all of what really went on. The others still think that War was responsible for the Death of the Time Lords, Destruction of Gallifrey etc...
Long story short he counts with all the wibbly wabbly regenerations and energy used, but the "honor" of being a Doctor is only remembered from Smith on.
I consider the War Doctor one of my faves so I'm not trying to belittle him, just trying to keep things straight without adding more confusion. Maybe I'm failing at that.

In The Name of the Doctor, Matt Smith's Doctor disowns the War Doctor because he'd destroyed Gallifrey. However, in The Day of the Doctor they managed to stop Gallifrey from being destroyed, so that would seem to reinstate him. Even John Hurt's own Doctor, during the Day of the Doctor, introduces himself as 'The Doctor' when they're communicating with the High Council when they tell them their plan for saving the planet.
Ok, I'm new to this group.
Here's my say on Peter Capaldi on which Doctor he is.
1. 1st incarnation of new regeneration cycle
2. 13th face
3. 14th life because David Tennant regenerated at the end of The Stolen Earth but didn't change his face. Even he (The 10th Doctor) said that it counts as a full regeneration, so 14th!

By Jove I think he's GOT IT! Yep that is about it in a nutshell.
Oh and Welcome to the group.

Isn't there a line from Day of the Doctor when 10 and 11 tell the War Doctor that he was the Doctor on the day it was the hardest to be the Doctor?
Capaldi is stated to be the 12th Doctor in all the episodes, marketing etc, and The War Doctor (who mostly appears as a guest character in one story set between the events of the Classic and New series) didn't count himself as an incarnation that held true to the promise and morals of the Doctor during the time war, so whilst Capaldi is the 14th life and 13th Doctor he is regarded as the 12th proper Doctor by the general public.

If you wanted to count all the Doctors there would be 13 (This doesn't include the war Doctor but does include the most newly announced one).-William Hartnell
-Patrick Troughton (Like)
-Jon Pertwee
-Tom Baker (Like)
-Peter Davison
-Colin Baker
-Sylvester McCoy
-Paul McGann
-Christopher Eccleston
-David Tennant (Like)
-Matt Smith (Like)
-Peter Capaldi (Like recently)
- Jodie Whittaker (Don't know)
But if you wanted to how many regeneration that would be 13, since they had David Tennant twice. It is very confusing. (This does not include the war Docter).
