We will begin this book read as soon as most of us have a copy. So pleas say below if you will be joining and when you will receive your copy. Congrats Joan!!

Here's a synopsis:

"In August 1831, Nat Turner leads a group of escaped slaves in a rebellion that rocks the South. The revolt comes to a quick and violent end. In November, Nat is publicly hanged, and as his body swings, a false sense of peace washes over Jerusalem, Virginia.

Unbeknownst to the world, on the day Nat Turner dies, his son, Nat Hope Turner, is born. Reared by Big Mama on the Turner plantation, young Nat’s identity is kept secret to keep him safe. As Nat grows to manhood, he leads his own uprising against slavery and is forever after known as Black.
Fate—by way of Big Mama—leads Black to rescue a young female slave, Sunday, before the plantation owner can sell her. Black has lived for liberty until the day he comes face to face with the alluring Sunday. As the two embark on a sexually charged ride toward love and freedom, they set off a chain of events that forces Black to risk his own liberty for hers.
Black shares the appealing tale of a passionate love between a man and a woman bound together to change their destiny."

I'm not that far ahead just yet. I'm only on chapter 2. But so far my opinion about Black is that he is proud. I'm wondering how long that will last or if life will make it fade. Can't wait to find out.

Prologue

What are your thoughts of the prologue as the introductory of this book?

message 38: by kisha, The Clean Up Lady (new) - rated it 5 stars

kisha | 3909 comments Mod
I absolutely loved the prologue. I thought that (so far) it was a great way to introduce the characters, the theme, and the setting of this story. It sounded so mean that they would even consider killing the baby but I understood clearly why it was even a consideration.

Joan Vassar | 127 comments Jane wrote: Please tell us about how you perceived Black as character how did he evolve?

I conceived/perceived Black as strong, intelligent, not perfect and serious about what he believes in. The character evolved for me through my need to see black men portrayed as responsible, selfless and able to love. These qualities are not depicted in the media, books or in the movies. I think there is nothing more beautiful than a black man finding sex and love in the same bed. Thus for me a character is born - I wanted a Black hero

message 41: by C.P. (new) - rated it 5 stars

C.P. Patrick (christineaplatt) | 44 comments I found the Prologue to be absolutely fascinating. I felt like I was there watching the two pivotal scenes - the murder and birth - unfold. I also loved the symbolism. The Prologue set the tone for getting sucked into the story. Also, I instantly fell in love w/Black, especially his strength and defiance. I am on Chapter 2 and can't wait to see what happens next!

Jane You have created a wonderful Black hero, Joan.
The prologue proved to be a gripping start. Loved it.

...black men portrayed as responsible, selfless and able to love. These qualities are not depicted in the media, books or in the movies.

Very valid point. I read a lot of historical fiction and most of them show black men as standoffish, brutal, emotionless, and unloving; which I think was a reality in those days for good reason. But it's so onesided. It's nice to see the other side of black men in the hf genre which can be loving, gentle, honorable ect. It's important to see history in all facets because if not then that is how stereotypes and myths are born.

Hi April Welcome! The way the group reads work is we typically come up with a schedule (that is typically loosely followed lol) and the discussion leader will pose questions. And there is no time limit in answering questions. So if you are behind schedule you can still join in. I hope that all made since.
