In The Heart of a Cougar
Preface
I ran along the bloodstained cliffs, their scarlet drops of blood mocked me as the only survivor still fighting, or so I thought. I dared a peek behind me, only to see the snarls of the Tracos behind me. I gasped and ran faster as they sped after me. My young legs couldn’t carry me much further. I was running along the edge of the cliffs, the river raged below me. I couldn’t breathe. I was only a couple months old, my older brother had abandoned me to save his own life, and I was left to run. My mind raced as I scurried along the edge. I heard them quickly gaining on me, their paws hitting the ground with heavy thuds. I heard a crack, and the rocks below my paws gave way, I was sent scrambling down the cliffs, I screamed and yelped as I hit the deep slopes over and over. I finally hit the water. I stay still, too tired to move. My lungs screamed for air, but my legs wouldn’t budge. I jumped as something’s jaws closed around the scruff of my neck, before darkness enclosed me…
Chapter One
I woke slowly as the bright light of dawn filtered through the cave opening, it’s burnt orange rays blinded me, I clutched my eyes shut and put a paw over them to make it darker. I moaned and rolled onto my back. A shadow came over me, “Wake up!” My older brother, Triton nudged me with a paw, I batted it away and rolled over, “Come on!” he grabbed the scruff of my neck and dragged me outside.
“Let me go!” I cried. He just smiled and pulled me out, I crossed my paws in front of me.
“Alex! Wake up! We have to get moving if were going to be at the falls by sundown!” he laughed, he released my scruff and I fell backwards onto the bright cliffs. I growled and placed my paws over my eyes and moaned.
Triton rolled his eyes, “Come on! We have to get going!”
“I don’t want to!” I argued, she knew it was a useless fight.
“Now!” Triton called, I looked up to see him padding away.
“Hey! Wait up!” I called and sprinted after him, matching him step-to-step. We padded along the narrow edge of the cliffs together, my stomach
growled, “I’m hungry!” I moaned.
Triton sighed and jumped, scrambling up the steep drop, I leapt up and tried to follow, but my claws weren’t long enough to hold on, he lowered his tail and I grabbed onto it with my teeth as he pulled me up.
I heard a whinny from behind me, looking down, I saw Kiara, and she was a tiny light bay horse with wings, with black stockings running up her legs. She was curious as to why I was biting Triton’s tail, I smiled, but accidentally let go of my improvise of a rope, and landed in front of Kiara, she laughed.
I moaned sleepily, “What’s wrong with you?” she asked, she had a southern accent, and a high-pitched melody voice to match it.
“I’m tired…” I whined.
“Stop complaining and get up!” Triton leapt down beside me and looked up at Kiara, “Were heading to the falls and she doesn’t want to get up!” he scolded
I smiled innocently. Triton just shook his head while Kiara laughed.
“Let’s get moving!” he called, padding away.
“Wait up!” I called after, sprinting, towards him, I was out of breath by the time I caught up to him panting.
“You need to run more!” he commented
“Shut up.” I snapped, “I run more than you! I heard hoof beats coming from behind us, I turned my head to see Kiara trotting after us, then I remembered she goes to the falls once a year to see her sister, Mira.
