We are back to Evnis. 19 years later and he still carries the effects of the night he made his deal with Asroth. He has risen high and is King Brenin's councillor.

This is a very short chapter. He is with his huntsman, Helfach (Rafe's father)

He and Helfach are waiting for someone, we don't find out his name only that he has a letter. It gives Evnis some instruction, offers him advice on how to cure his ill wife using the 'earth power' and reminds him of his oath made so long ago. it tells him to 'Find the book' and that his only real chance of curing his wife is the cauldron; mentioned in Halvor's writing.

Evnins gives the man (who works for someone called Braith) directions to a hold in the north-east of the Baglun. All that is clear is that this man is to burn the hold and the man himself says he'll not be killing women and bairns.

We also learn that Queen Alona hates Evnis. She blames him for her brother Rhagor's death. Which he admits.

I find Evnis to be a complex individual. He has an agenda but obviously cares for his wife a great deal.
