How do you feel the story is progressing? slow, fast or on pace? Does the flow of the story effect your reading speed?

message 2: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Downes | 5 comments So far everything seems to be moving as it should but since the story line of my enemy and I must join forces to survive usually entails that the two parties will either become friends and allies or one will betray the other, I the pace will increase. (Hard not to give things away...)

Travis At first it felt like the story was progressing rather fast. But I think that's an artifact of the story starting so soon after RotJ. That makes the characters themselves feel rushed: Luke rushes himself out of medical to join the mission that has to leave right away, Han attempts to create an intimate setting with Leia only to get interrupted. When I objectively look at the pacing, though, it feels right.

Most Star Wars novels read rather quickly for me. That's due to most of the characters being so familiar, so I don't have to focus so much on learning a bunch of new characteristics, motives, descriptions, etc. That's one reason I love reading Star Wars, it's like the reading equivalent of comfort food.

The only parts that moved slow for me were the space battles.

Boring.

I always seem to lose focus when spaceships are shooting at each other.

Travis Aaron: I've found myself losing focus reading detailed descriptions of sword fights and such in fantasy novels as well. And I used to love Drizzt Do'Urden novels! I acknowledge it's difficult to write a good yet detailed action sequence, though, as I tried my hand at a short hand-to-hand fighting scene several years ago and it turned out terrible.

Derek Gatz (derekgatz) | 96 comments i LOVE space battles but readind about them if something crucial is not happening can be very boring..

message 7: by Ben (new)

Ben I find the pace of the book to be pretty good so far. Admittedly, I would have liked to have spent a little more time with the fleet at the beginning. With it taking place straight after ROTJ, it would have been nice to see a little more reflection on the Emperor's death and the Death Star's destruction from characters besides Luke. But overall, the pace is nice so far.

space battles for me either make me tired and sleepy or they make me super anxious and like I can't sit down.

Scott Hume | 7 comments The first time I read this book, very little of it 'stuck' in my mind so that when I reread it for the book club it felt like I was reading it for the first time. For me, it is a book that has some good moments, but also some missed opportunities. I really wanted to read how others reacted to the news about Luke and Leia and their parentage. I liked the idea of a foe that the Empire and Rebels had to work together to defeat, but I was never that intrigued by the foe itself.
