I remember this book, I think it might've been called Charlie. She didn't live on the farm, I think she was hiding at the farm, stealing food & stuff. I remember the milk curdled from the heat at the end before she gave herself up. I hope someone removers the title because I was looking for it too. I read it in the 70s and it was from way before that.
I don't know if it's the one my friend remembers, waiting to hear back from her, but I think the one you mentioned is The Girl Who Ran Away. It was also published as Charley.edit: That's the book she was thinking of! SOLVED

"A young girl is sent to her boring aunt's while her sick younger brother and mother go to the seaside. I think the book took place in the 30's or 40's. The girl's name, I THINK, was Charlie.
Charlie gets to her aunt's house by train. Her aunt didn't get the message that Charlie would be visiting for a few weeks as the letter got lost (in the mail, maybe?). Charlie ends up at her aunt's empty farm alone. It's possible that Charlie hid the letter in a book OR her mother never sent it.
Charlie lives on the farm alone for a while. I THINK she might have made a friend in town who helps her out. Eventually her aunt figures out what's going on and comes home. There might have been bees, cows, or horse mentioned. I think there was a meadow involved.
I read this book no later than 1996. It had to have been from before the 80's, and possibly from the 30's-40's. The cover MIGHT have had the meadow on it with a fence and a tree."
It's possible the girl was named Charlene if not Charlie, but that's also very tentative.
She said she'll try to remember more, but that's the best she has right now.
Several people have said they vaguely remember the book too, but nobody can seem to come up with a name.
edit: oops. Reply is not edit.
She just got back to me and said it's definitely not A Year Down Yonder or Understood Betsy, which someone elsewhere suggested.
