Jess (jesmy777) One of the best books I've read in years!!

Amira (liightningbolt) | 68 comments I've ordered my copy :) Want to add this book to my collection. For some reason, the opening line has been imprinted in my brain for years.. Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.~

I just downloaded the Kindle edition. If I fall in love with it, I'll buy a paperback edition.

Amira (liightningbolt) | 68 comments About 50 pages in and loving it. It started slowly due to all the descriptions of nature (which actually continues sporadically and I think there's a purpose), but once Mrs. Van Hopper was introduced, it read more quickly.

Amira (liightningbolt) | 68 comments Halfway through now. Grown used to the overly long descriptions of the flowers and trees and gardens and blah blah. I love the fact that the protagonist is nameless; it's so unique. Mrs. Danvers is SO creepy, but I'm wondering what her end game is. And the mystery man on the beach, Ben.

(view spoiler)

Of course, there's tons of comparisons with Rebecca to Jane Eyre, but I much prefer Mr. de Winters to Mr. Rochester so far. Anyone agree? The former wouldn't exist without the latter though.

Hugo | 4 comments I finished this yesterday and loved it!
I really enjoyed all the characters, even the unnamed protagonist. I know she's supposed to be boring, but I liked to read about her social awkwardness and loved all her extensive daydreaming.

I read that the author has been accused of plagiarism due to similarities to a brazilian novel called "A Sucessora". Has anyone read it?

I have an edition with an introduction. Does anyone ever reads introductions?"

I feel like they often spoil the plot so I usually read them afterwards. My edition didn't have an introduction but it did have an afterword that answered some questions I had about the novel.

Ohhh I started to read this a week ago! I'm 80% done, I think.

I want to slap and hug The Narrator at the same time, lol! which I just realized NEVER HAD A NAME! That must be on purpose!

Also I want to slap the shit out of Maxim...

OK Rebecca is really an asshole (I won't make excuses for her awful behavior but at the same time I admire the hell out of her, to be honest, I don't admire her shitty actions tho) but Maxim, he pissed me off so much, what a weak personality.

The Narrator's personality feels boring but at the same time, du Maurier's writing is so good that I care for her deeply.

I'm probably going to finish it today, will come back with my final thoughts!

Amira (liightningbolt) | 68 comments Finished this last night. It was AMAZING. Gave it 4.5/5 and I still think it's a harsh rating lol.

@MLNO

Only read Introductions after completing the book because SPOILERS. It happens all the time.

@Hugo

Never heard of any plagiarism complaints. I'll be so sad if they're true.

@MNLO

I loved that scene. It was so ridiculous, but delightful at the same time?!

Kohinoor One of the best books I've read. I have to say, I did not see that coming, about Rebecca's character description!

Linda (poodlemama9) | 13 comments Yes. These are classics for a reason. Get Wuthering Heights in audible. It is read by Patricia Routlage.
