Mike | 0 comments Hi everyone!

Hope you are doing well. I wanted to get a sense of what you might like to read next. Do you have anything on your To-Be-Read list that you're hoping to dive into and would like to discuss it with the rest of us? If so, let me know and we will set something up.

Thanks!

Steve | 19 comments My suggestions.

Decision in Philadelphia The Constitutional Convention of 1787 by Christopher Collier

Act of War Lyndon Johnson, North Korea, and the Capture of the Spy Ship Pueblo by Jack Cheevers

A Country of Vast Designs James K. Polk, the Mexican War and the Conquest of the American Continent by Robert W. Merry

Susan Stephenson | 5 comments I would like either Decision in Philadelphia or the Polk book. Maybe Polk a little more for several reasons: generally he is a very under studies president, and Thoreau 's Civil Disobedience essay grew out of his opposition to the Mexican War.

Amanda (jupiterhalo) | 1 comments Both Decision in Philadelphia and Polk sound really good! Here are a few more suggestions, as well:

Band of Giants The Amateur Soldiers Who Won America's Independence by Jack Kelly

Men of War The Experience of Battle, from Bunker Hill to Gettysburg to Iwo Jima by Alexander Rose

Kyle I just started the first volume of Boorstin's The Americans. Seems interesting so far.

Steve | 19 comments So it's been quite a while, does anyone have interest in getting another book started? I'm currently working through Five Families by Selwyn Raab, looking at the history of the American Mafia.

Susan Stephenson | 5 comments How about Chernow's Hamilton, especially given the current Broadway hit based upon it, or Bully Pulpit?

Seems given presidential election maybe someone has a suggestion based on populism.

Mike | 0 comments So sorry to have let this group go quiet. My wife and I just had a baby and things have been crazy for the last few months.

If someone wants to pick the ball up and run with it for awhile, please do!

(And Hamilton is an amazing read! One of my favorites.)

Kyle I did Bully Pulpit last year, it was definitely interesting and worthwhile. Chernow did a great job with Washington, so I would be interested to see how he deals with Washington's protege. Their stories are closely intertwined.

Having said that, I've got a lot on my plate right now. So don't make any decisions based on me...I'll try to jump in if I can, though.

Steve | 19 comments So i'm about halfway through Joseph Ellis The Quartet and it is an interesting read. I can't remember the immediate post revolutionary war period covered in much detail in school and thats a shame. Too often we skip over those several years under the articles of confederation without learning all the difficulties that document presented our founders trying to govern an upstart country with no good credit and a mountain of war debt to pay off.
