Ooooh, I *love* recommendations! Thank you!I just said it on Twitter, I'll say it again, here and EVERYWHERE: you should all read Becky Chambers' The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet. I, too, am sad it's over!
Three cheers for diversity in science fiction! This is like one big, wonderful episode of Firefly. Only Captain Ashby isn't a swashbuckling space cowboy and Kizzie doesn't have to shag a mechanic to replace him, and the pilot is an alien (a female alien!) and everything is awesome. The world building is wonderful, it's a mature universe (galactic coalition style), post-scarcity-exodus, post-first contact story with real people in it. Breezy narration, simple, straightforward plot, nothing but likeable characters, I loved it. LOVED IT. I shall recommend it until I go blue in the face.

For me, my most recent read like that was Vicious by V.E. Schwab. It was such a good book that I'm sad I'm done reading it now. (Review - http://yepireadthat.tumblr.com/post/1...)
