I liked seeing a brief, softer side to his father. A hard man, but not without a kindness and joy at wanting to see his son receive a gift.
Amusing that Corban thought he would easily brush aside Gar with a sword in hand, where in fact there's more to Gar than meets the eye it seems.

Corban Gets on with his routine that Gar has set him, it has been two ten-nights and he finds he is stronger and more flexible. He finishes his session with the 'slow dance' as he puts it. As he leaves Gar tosses him something, a practice sword! Young Corban is thrilled and excited to show Gar how capable he is with a blade. He promises to take it easy on the old warrior, attacks and promptly finds himself face down in the hay. This procedure is repeated until in a friendly exchange both Gar and Corban agree he would benefit from some lessons.
When Corban gets home his father is the only one home. He and Corban eat and then he tells Corban to follow him. His father tells Ban that Gar's stallion has just fathered a foal, a skewbald colt and it is his if he wants it.
The chapter ends with Marrock and Pendathran were returning from the Baaglun with the men who rode out. They pulled a wain covered over in hide. The wain strikes a rock, bounces and out of the hide flops an arm...
Mystery! :-)
