This isn't proof that she was hanged, but it was the most common method of execution then, except for things like treason. In Wiki, at:

Under "Notable Executions in the United Kingdom," near the bottom:
9 August 1856: Elizabeth Martha Brown was the last woman to be hanged in public in the English county of Dorset; her hanging is notable in part because it influenced Thomas Hardy, an eyewitness, in his portrayal of the execution of the fictional heroine of Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

It's so heartbreaking to know that there's a real person on whom Tess's charactor is based.

I am still "under the weather" of this tragedy. So profound, so powerful, so unfortunate! This "President of the Immortals of Aeschylean" was just utterly unfair!
