2014 Hub Reading Challenge discussion

Great story, and well told. I learned a lot about the first soldiers to start the first step towards integrating the military. Sad how these brave men were treated, and yet inspirational that they wanted to serve our country during this time. Ironic that they were in such a segregated military fighting against the Nazi's.

This is a great nonfiction book. It tells the story of black soldiers in WWII, and how they've been mostly overlooked by history. I loved the use of pictures in this book, it really helped me connect with the history. I would have liked to see a few maps included in the book as well, to help track where the soldiers were and what they were doing. I'd recommend this to a teen interested in WWII, or the military.

Great non-fiction read. I enjoyed the story of courage and pride that these gentlemen showed in the face of great adversity. I too thought the photos were a nice addition and enjoyed the authors note at the end when she mentioned that the photos with the white borders were provided by the soldiers families. I had to go back through to look again - nice touch. I didn't know anything about the Japanese use of bomb balloons during the war, I love to learn something new. My only wish is that the book would be regular size. Odd shaped books are a hard sell at my library.
