This folder will be a place to post upcoming book readings and events by authors of color writing literary fiction. Please post the location, date, and time of readings that you think will be of interest to the group.

I like this idea. I just attended a great event with Teju Cole on yesterday. It was standing room only. I look forward to sharing.
Dr. Daniel Black will be at the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL) Book Festival April 5, 2014. His Literary Fiction panel discussion begins at 11 am and its focus will be "Deception, Secrets and the Long Road to Redemption."
Several of our group members have read Zakes Mda's Ways of Dying. He will be in Atlanta at Centennial Hall Auditorium-- 100 Auburn Ave. Georgia State University on March 28th @11:00 a.m. This is part of the Five from Five Literary series (South Africa, Brazil, China, South Korea & Turkey).
Columbus wrote: "Several of our group members have read Zakes Mda's Ways of Dying. He will be in Atlanta at Centennial Hall Auditorium-- 100 Auburn Ave. Georgia State University on March..."I enjoyed his book(s). I hope it's recorded, I'd like to hear what he has to say.
thanks Wilhemina! I often miss great readings and events by a day or two. This folder is a great idea!
It is a great idea. I shall try to keep up with all the book happenings in the DC area and post then here. Pretty sure the Smithsonian's annual national book festival should be coming soon.
Late notice but Teju Cole will be in San Francisco tonight at 7:30 PM at BookSmith promoting Everyday Is For the Thief.
Pearl Cleage starts her book tour for Things I Should Have Told My Daughter: Lies, Lessons & Love Affairs at the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta on April 7th then followed by an appearance at Charis Books on April 18th. While this is a memoir and not a novel, Cleage is a favorite among many of our group members.

The launch party for my debut novel, "'Til the Well Runs Dry", will be held at the Ivy Bookshop in Baltimore on April 21st at 7pm. It is listed as "One of the 10 books to Read Now" in this month's O magazine! Would love to see you there!
A lot of authors read at Charis Books. Pearl Cleage is reading there in June. And then there's the Decatur Book Fair in August - great event! I've seen so many of my favorite authors there, from Tayari Jones to Edward P. Jones to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and more. http://www.charisbooksandmore.com/eve...

He does not self censor so the attendees are in for an interesting evening, to say the least. I've only read one of his books but [book:Black Betty and Fortunate Son are high on my priority list.

Hmmm... I still think that 2010 and 2011 were better. I wonder if there is a way to suggest authors for them to invite.

I know I've missed some good author readings in the past, Mina. As I was telling you, this festival coincides with the largest free Jazz festival in the world - Detroit International Jazz Festival. I get to go home to see my family, eat some delicious food and this year enjoy The Pharoah Sanders Quartet, Joshua Redman, Lou Donaldson & Regina Carter among many other giants in the industry - Free! Ok, now that I got that plug in. What authors did I miss in '10 & '11?

Let's see - off the top of my head, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Tayari Jones, Tananarive Due, Jesmyn Ward, Elizabeth Nunez, Patricia Smith, Natasha Trethewey, Persia Walker and probably a few more if I thought about it a little longer! Oh, and in what I think was the first year of the festival, the brilliant and reclusive Edward P. Jones.
Waldorf West Library is hosting an Annual Authors Reception on Saturday, August 9, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Notable among the authors participating is the African American inspirational author, Yvonne Medley. I've read one of Yvonne Medley's three books and I would describe her writing as Christian fiction. The library is located at 10405 O'Donnell Place, Waldorf, MD 20603.
For those in town or who may be visiting the DC area this weekend here is the Library of Congress National Book festival schedule:http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/schedule/
I'm gonna try really hard to get downtown and checkout Ishmeal Beah...but Sat mornings can sometimes be problematic (code: I like to sleep in!)
I will be doing a reading from Til the Well Runs Dry at the Bowie Barnes and Noble next Sunday at noon. Hope some of you can make it!
The Decatur Book Festival is today. If any of the ATL residents come out, let me know. I'm here!!!!!
