I just wanted to start a discussion about point of view.
In chapter eight Nevery thinks of Conn as just a servant. Conn thinks he is more than that, Conn thinks he is a apprentice to Nevery and is hurt when Nevery calls him a servant and almost turns down the opportunity to be a wizards servant, but Nevery thinks on his toes and lets him be his apprentice. Then Nevery's point of view changes and he doesn't want to have an apprentice.
