Close to Shore discussion

I have been reading this book for a long time now, but I have still failed to find a character(s) that are crucial to the story. The story has just been hoping around from one character to the next and after the author feels that the we know enough about that one character, the character is then sent into death alley where the man-eater shark devours them in a few pages. If anybody knows some main characters that don´t die in the book please let me know, or do all of does the author mainly just focus on the setting and what happened during 1916?

For P.O.V in Close to Shore, I've found it constantly changing, with most of the main characters actually dying to the man-eating shark, so this is the first book thar I've read that isn't one main character that is constantly alive, and has a worth. If somebody knows a main character that is alive all throughout the book, please tell me since I've found 0 permanent P.O.V's.
