I read this book in the early 80's. It was about a girl who went to a world where there were no trees except for 1. There were bad guys that the people of the planet could hide from by going into places made from trees. The girl was friends with someone wearing a hairy coat. They eventually found the 1 tree but it was guarded by the bad guys.

Not the Lorax or the The That Conquered the World. Thanks though.I was probably 7-8 when I read it. It had chapters but also black and white sketches in it. It was sort of a fantasy like the Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

Glad you found it. Hadn't heard of Nation's book described like that before, nor been ableto come across it, but it's an often asked for book elsewhere.
