Corban is the POV for this chapter. It starts with him hiding outside of Brina the 'witches' cottage. After much deliberation he eventually musters up the courage to sneak into the cottage, preferably without being seen, He climbs in one room through the shutters and finds a bone comb, perfect for the proof that Rafe needs.
He is then confronted abruptly by a crow called Craf, who repeatedly calls him 'Stealer'. Brina question's Corban and with the help of her pet crow, Corban spills the truth about the dare. It seems that Corban's death is high on the Crows list of things Corban deserves, but Brina decides to punish Corban through the amount of chores that she needs doing, so she allows Corban to borrow the comb, and then return soon to clean Brina's cottage and help collect herbs.
When Corban returns to the small group near the cottage Rafe and Crain don't believe it's Brina's comb. Dath tells Rafe to hand Corban the practice sword, but Rafe hits Dath, and Corban felt his temper rise. He launches himself at Rafe and brings Rafe to the floor. After Corban is distracted by Dath's laughter Rafe manages to punch Corban, and just before he strikes Corban with the sword Cywen throws a knife at the floor before Rafe's feet.
The next day Corban tells Gar of the hustle between him and Rafe, and Gar tells Corban that he let the anger get the best of him, hence why the fight again resulted in a bruised face. Gar suggests that perhaps Corban uses the 'power of words' instead of fighting next time.
When Corban see's his mam Gwenith, Corban tells her he fell over, but Thannon doesn't seem to be convinced. Corban goes to his da's forge to help out for the morning, and whilst he is there Vonn visits them. As he is leaving he apologises to Corban for Rafe's actions. Thannon is none too pleased about Corban lying to Gwenith, so Thannon decides to teach Corban the power of words. As he is marching off with Corban in tow, Corban see's Gar and Cywen following them.
When Thannon stops they are outside Evnis' hold. Thank calls for Helfach, Rafe's da, and when Helfach comes out Thannon tells Helfach to ensure Rafe doesn't pick on Corban again as he is in the Rowan field and Corban isn't. Helfach reacts angrily, and Thannon loses his control and punches Helfach. As the fight, Buddai the hound attacks Helfach's hound, and Gar incapacitates the guard outside Evnis' gate. Thank beats Helfach unconscious. It turns out that wasn't what Thannon intended to happen when he taught Corban the power of words.
Corban then goes to Brina's cottage where she talks to him of the plants and herbs he will have to collect for her. Brina tells him Evnis' wife is feeling and looking better suddenly. Brina also tells Corban to return once every week to clean. Even though she is sour she seems to like Corban.
A long chapter but good to meet new characters, and I know that Craf is a very enjoyable crow to read about. What do you guys think?
