I put it on hold at my library, and I see it's been shipped. I'm quite intrigued by this premise of this book.
Me too, Janice. I was surprised I hadn't already added this one. Looks like a goodie. I love her writing style.
I am in also. Already borrowed from the library. I took a chance it would be chosen and was right. I will try to begin it in the next few days...
There is a movie based on this book (I haven't seen it)I've read all Waters's books and this one along with The Little Stranger is my favourite.
I had a great fun guessing (view spoiler)
I just picked it up from the library today(along with many more). I picked up Fingersmith as well for the buddy read. I haven't read anything by this author yet but I've heard a lot of good things so I'm looking forward to starting tonight.
Just got this one today, and I'm excited about starting it. I have read a few of this author's previous books and enjoyed them.
I also have this one on my Kindle . I read The Little Stranger just a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it ,so I'm hoping this one is just as good !
I just got an email from the library that Affinity has arrived. I won't be able to start reading it until next week some time. I have another book to finish up first.
I finished it, but I'll wait to comment until others finish. It seems like I just swallowed the book whole. : )
I just finished it but my head's still spinning from it. I liked it although the writing style wasn't the easiest for me to get into.
I took a peak at the first chapter and I think I'm going to enjoy it. I am 1/2 through my current read...I'll probably pick this one up by start of next week.
I will be joining in with this one once I've finished my two buddy reads. I'm intrigued by people's comments so far!
I'm only on page 8, but man. This woman knows how to set a scene, she knows how to build tension, and she knows how to keep the reader off-balance. An intriguing start. It's reminding me a lot of The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, which I loved.
Has anyone worked in a jail? I don't know if I could do it. The thought of gates locking behind me is very creepy.
I'm only in the first chapter of part one (Sept 24 1874), but boy, does she put you right there. (view spoiler)
Does Margaret seem vulnerable (view spoiler)?(view spoiler) She is taking medication to help her sleep and to help her forget every night.
Ok I have just started and already have a quote that popped out at me.(view spoiler)
In the understatement of the day category I'm thinking 1874 was probably not the best time to have a mental illness.
I so want to get started on this book. Just need to finish The Shadow of the Wind and I'll be along! Mental illness is right up my street! I think you might be right Marnie - I've heard some terrible things about Mental Asylums in England back in those days (and sadly some things in the 1900s as well).
Marnie, that quote popped out at me too! This is a chilling book, creepy creepy for me so far.
I'm halfway through the Sept. 30 1874 chapter (only 11% in). I have a feeling you guys are ahead of me. I've not met Selina yet. Not properly, anyway.
Did anyone else almost see and feel the doors clanging behind them when they were walking through the first time? That just really creeps me out, the idea of being locked in someplace and not being able to get out.

Laura- I am a little behind you at 10%.When the doors were closing and also when she described the long hallways my claustrophobia kicked in. I remember when my kids were teenagers telling them not to make stupid choices ( I probably worded it nicer but not by much) because, while I would always love them, I am too claustrophobic to visit them in jail! Thankfully, my parental pep talk worked !
Good one, Marnie! :D Glad it worked lol!I don't know if I could do it......would be very tough. I'd rather be stuck in an elevator. I think I'd just worry that the lock would malfunction and I'd be stuck in there! Plus, the idea of being stuck in there with some real bad baddies makes me wanna shiver. I have to wonder if this is the best therapy for someone who's mentally ill!
Laura,I've been wondering the same thing, why Margaret would take a job like this with her depression and suicide attempt. It's probably the most depressing volunteer work she could have found for that period.
I was going to say maybe it becomes clear by the end of the book, but you've finished it, right June?
Yeah, I don't know if I missed it. I wrote down three things I want to discuss when more people finish.(And when I'm not using my phone). Overall I did really like the book.
I'm enjoying this one, I love the atmosphere and the talk of spirits, but it's not a read I find myself wanting to read every spare moment. I'm over 60% finished and will probably finish up this weekend.
Same, I'm enjoying it, but other reads are pulling me more, I think because it is so dark! Still, I love her writing and hope to get more time with it this weekend.

I think more depressing volunteer job would have been in a orphanage, hospital or workhouse. (If they accepted volunteers)
I've just checked this one out from the lib. It's not a book that I would have ever picked up on my own, but I'll see how it goes :) ps- this is my first read for this group! hi.
