Kayla, around what year did you read this book?
Was it for children, teens or adults?
What was the tone - funny, sad, angsty, coming-of-age, etc.?
What was the main theme - e.g., challenge of being a single father?

Kris - we read this book this past spring in book club. The book was a young adult, I believe. We've read about utopias, and I'm wondering if that was the premise of this one. I really can't remember much about it. But I think someone passes away, and the child chooses that name or something similar when he gets to choose his name...
This is a long shot, but I have a vague memory that the original description of Enclave involved the characters earning a name when they reached a certain age and proved themselves. But that's not the description that's up anymore. Also for some reason this makes me think of The Giver even though they have names.
I haven't read Enclave. We did read The Giver, so that may be it. I think the baby that the dad brought home wasn't supposed to have a name yet, but the dad gave him one anyway. That may be it. I will check into that one. Thanks!
Yes, that happened in The Giver. Babies don't get names until it's determined they get to live, and the dad brought one home to care for it. And then the boy takes him when he goes on the run, and eventually names him for good.
We looked into this one again, and it was not The Giver that we were thinking of. In this particular book, the main character was traveling somewhere and met a family in which the father of a couple of children explained that the children would get to pick their own name at a certain point in their life. I believe the son was named "two" until he chose his own name.
We read Ashfall. Have any of you that have read Ashfall recall Alex meeting a family in which the children got to choose their names as he was traveling to find his parents?
Still looking for this book. We determined that it was not Ashfall, and it is not The Giver. Thanks!
The Giver Quartet series by Lois Lowry for Trillian's suggestion - https://www.goodreads.com/series/4360...
Thank you Trillian, we did not read any sequels...so I don't think that is the one I am looking for. Thank you for your thoughts!

You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 176 where fewer eyes will see it. Get back in the game! Bump!
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."
Good luck!

This sounds super familiar to me.Do you remember if the setting was our modern society or a futuristic one?
Kayla, around what year did you read this book?
Can you tell us more about the main character (e.g., his age, job, why and where he's traveling, any romance, etc.)?
How is this world different from our present day Earth?
I copied a few book details to the topic header. Feel free to edit it.

In the story the main character meets a family (or a dad) with a couple of kids. The kids get to chose a name when they are old enough to do so. I think the kid was named 2 until he could change his name.
I know he picks a name that represents our main character, but I can not for the life of me remember what it is called or what name he picks.
