She comes into and out of the lives of four very different people on a road trip to Alaska to see the Northern Lights. At least that’s her story as to why she’s traveling across the country at age 18. She meets a small-town mechanic, a runaway girl who likes to steal for the fun of it, a hapless romantic in love with the right girl, and a girl who lost her love and is afraid to love again. Leila stumbles, sometimes literately, into these people’s lives and causes a chain of events for each, dealing with very intimate issues. All the while Leila’s sub-conscious keeps her at arms distance, never focusing publicly on her own needs but on others almost as a distraction to prevent her from facing her own issues. (SPOILER ALERT) Leila was the victim of amnesia and was searching for something to help her remember. Northern Lights were a small thing she kept in her memories and that’s where she’d hoped to find answers. Instead she realized she needed to move on. “It was time, she realized. It was time to stop chasing after all that she’d lost. She had gone on this trip because she needed to be away from an unfamiliar life, and somewhere along the way she’d become lost herself.”
