Addy | 379 comments I know this was a group read, but since this book is a monster and I'm a slow reader, Daniel and I decided to buddyread it. If there's anyone else out there who didn't finish or wants to join in feel free.

We are around the 30% mark.

message 2: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Thanks! :)

message 3: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments "Apparently." Lol!

message 4: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Apparently? I must be slow lol

message 5: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Its what xandra says to Theo all the time:)

message 6: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Oh. Duh. Haha. You didn't say it sarcastically or trashy enough.

message 7: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments I did put it in quotes...lol. I think I'm pretty close to where u are at.

message 8: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Pg 254...4 pages ahead. Mission accomplished! Im turning in. Kinda sad. Theo's life. I wouldn't want it. I hope he writes Hobie soon.

GeneralTHC This is a good book. Couldn't believe it when Theo's dad showed up.

message 10: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Well, knowing your competitive nature, I told you I was on page 250, but in all actuality, I am on page 233. Ha!

message 11: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) And what about his friendship with Boris?

message 12: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) How different would his life be up to this point had he been able to stay with the Barbours instead of with his father?

message 13: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments The friendship with Boris is a strange one. They are very much alone and unloved.

message 14: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Yes, I was very much shocked when theo's dad showed up. He is no father figure.

message 15: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Good morning. Makes you wonder if no parents are better than bad parents.

message 16: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Didn't get to this yesterday. Maybe today.

message 17: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) I am on pg 300 :)

message 18: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Nice!

message 19: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Where are you?

message 20: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments The same. Like 250. Trying to catch up right now.

message 21: by Angie (new)

Angie | 623 comments What did you think of the Vegas section? It was one of my favourite parts of this book, and I was left wondering how accurate do you think it was. Is life really like that for lots of kids there. I loved Boris as well, I don't know how Theo would of coped without him.

message 22: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Vegas is probably a lot like that now. So much sprawl, so quick, that I have heard there are communities that are virtually empty.

I don't know, with all the drugs and stuff he and Boris are into.

message 23: by Angie (new)

Angie | 623 comments They are bad for it and the drinking as well. Its such a big shock for Theo, he was sheltered growing up but he was getting into things in new York before his mum died. The robbing with Tom for one. He kind of lived in his own head a lot even then, and Vegas made him worse. His worry over the painting doesn't help either.

message 24: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Yes. I see where u both are coming from. Regardless, Theo prob would have gotten into those things anyway. For him it happened at a younger age because there was no supervision and no structure. Its just sad to see Theo and Boris hit rock bottom so early. They haven't even lived! The abuse that Boris endures is sickening. I really hope someone can reach out to these boys.

message 25: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) What page are you on, Addy?

message 26: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments 277 I think

message 27: by Angie (new)

Angie | 623 comments The whole Vegas part made me wonder at how Donna Tarrt researched the book. She must of spent some time there with the kids.

message 28: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Weird. Its like Boris and Theo fooled around with each other? Its kind of a strange relationship, but one that worked for both of them.

message 29: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) It was not a sexual thing, I don't think. I just think Boris feels lost and Theo is the closest thing he has had to real love.

message 30: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Yeah. That's true.

message 31: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) What Page are you on?

message 32: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments 308

message 33: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Cool

message 34: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments I got to the part about the money. Are u past that?

message 35: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) What money? What page?

message 36: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments I don't know. The part where theos dad asks him to get money from the lawyer.

message 37: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Oh yeah. That was a horrible scene. I was almost thinking his father was really turning a new leaf

message 38: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Me too. Fools we are:)

message 39: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) What a d-bag.

message 40: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments So now his father dies? I know it can happen but to me its a little far fetched. I'll go with it.

message 41: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) The guy was a train wreck. Still, can't be good for Theo's emotional state.

message 42: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Just seemed like he would have kicked the bucket a long time ago. So unsteady and always in financial trouble.

message 43: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments My guess is that he'll live with Hobie, reconnect with the girl and solve the problem of the painting. Guess we'll see.

message 44: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Good morning. Where else does he have to go? His grandparents don't want him.

message 45: by Angie (new)

Angie | 623 comments Does Theo even now anything about his grandparents? I'm not sure he does. Its good he takes the little dog with him when he runs back to NY. At least he knows there's some financial support waiting for him and his dad was really low wasn't he? I think he only took Theo in because he wanted the money.

message 46: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments I think so too Angie:)

message 47: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) Dad of the year.

message 48: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Definitely! Lol.

message 49: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) How is everyone coming along?

message 50: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Im at the part where he is with hobie. Around 50%.
