The Goldfinch
Pg 254...4 pages ahead. Mission accomplished! Im turning in. Kinda sad. Theo's life. I wouldn't want it. I hope he writes Hobie soon.
Well, knowing your competitive nature, I told you I was on page 250, but in all actuality, I am on page 233. Ha!
How different would his life be up to this point had he been able to stay with the Barbours instead of with his father?
What did you think of the Vegas section? It was one of my favourite parts of this book, and I was left wondering how accurate do you think it was. Is life really like that for lots of kids there. I loved Boris as well, I don't know how Theo would of coped without him.
Vegas is probably a lot like that now. So much sprawl, so quick, that I have heard there are communities that are virtually empty. I don't know, with all the drugs and stuff he and Boris are into.
They are bad for it and the drinking as well. Its such a big shock for Theo, he was sheltered growing up but he was getting into things in new York before his mum died. The robbing with Tom for one. He kind of lived in his own head a lot even then, and Vegas made him worse. His worry over the painting doesn't help either.
Yes. I see where u both are coming from. Regardless, Theo prob would have gotten into those things anyway. For him it happened at a younger age because there was no supervision and no structure. Its just sad to see Theo and Boris hit rock bottom so early. They haven't even lived! The abuse that Boris endures is sickening. I really hope someone can reach out to these boys.
The whole Vegas part made me wonder at how Donna Tarrt researched the book. She must of spent some time there with the kids.
Weird. Its like Boris and Theo fooled around with each other? Its kind of a strange relationship, but one that worked for both of them.
It was not a sexual thing, I don't think. I just think Boris feels lost and Theo is the closest thing he has had to real love.
Just seemed like he would have kicked the bucket a long time ago. So unsteady and always in financial trouble.
My guess is that he'll live with Hobie, reconnect with the girl and solve the problem of the painting. Guess we'll see.
Does Theo even now anything about his grandparents? I'm not sure he does. Its good he takes the little dog with him when he runs back to NY. At least he knows there's some financial support waiting for him and his dad was really low wasn't he? I think he only took Theo in because he wanted the money.
