Gentleman Bastards discussion

I have a question about all of the alchemical stuff. How does that system work? Does it all come down to chemistry, or is there magic involved? I can't recall a detailed explanation of it.

Apparently their world functions differently from ours since they genetically modify plants to impossible degrees.
