Melissa (ahes) | 186 comments I found a pronunciation guide on the author's website. This might be handy.

The reader may appreciate some assistance with the Irish names used in the Sevenwaters books. Please note there can be several versions of the spelling and pronunciation of a name, all perfectly valid. For instance, if you ask someone in Dublin to pronounce the name Sorcha you'll get one answer, but a person from County Kerry will give you a different version.

Aisling: Ash-ling

Aoife: Ee-fa

Ciarán: Kee-a-raun

Clodagh: Klo-dah

Darragh: Darr-a

Diarmid: Dear-mid

Deirdre: Deer-dra

Eamonn: Ay-mon

Eilis: Ay-lish

Fainne: Faun-ya

Fionn: Fyunn

Liadan: Lee-a-dan

Muirrin: Mirr-in

Niamh: Nee-av

Oonagh: Oo-na

Padriac: Pad-ric (more commonly spelt Padraic)

Roisin: Ro-sheen

Seamus: Shay-mus

Sorcha: Sor-ca or Sur-ha

Uí Néill: Ee Nay-ill

Eliste | 111 comments I was totally going to do a "this is how we say these names in Ireland" but this is close to spot on so now I don't have to. I do hope the girls will look at this before the hang out as I got in one chapter and knew the pronunciations were going to be cringe-worthy.

I will say Niamh can be just simply Neev and ui Neill is the Irish version of O'Neill and that's acceptable.

Miche (noisygeek) | 13 comments Thanks for this Melissa I was going to look for something to check out the names : ) Xox

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Thanks for this! The Gaelic is so pretty, but difficult for Americans to read without a guide :) (like the Scottish Laoghaire; Leery, L'heer, etc. that we saw in Outlander)

Courtney | 26 comments Urgh I should check the forums more often. I just finished the second Sevenwaters book and I think I managed to pronounce three names right. Between the two books that adds up to about 900 pages of slaughter! Not counting the English-y names. I mean Red, John, Ben...I got those in the BAG!

Laura (theloudlady) | 180 comments I really hope that someone makes audio pronunciation available within a digital dictionary.

That is not how they say her name in the audiobook... it was more like "Ser-ah-ha"

Just.me | 1 comments Found a baby name site with pronunciations...and audio clips. It said is pronounced sor + aka or surk + ha.
