This is a Buddy Read for Interlude In Death. Many of us have decided to take a slow stroll back through the series. We all have other books to read, so no hurry. Please join us if you want to do a reread, are new to the series, or just want to jump in our discussions.

In early spring of 2059, Lieutenant Eve Dallas is called off planet to face a grueling ordeal - giving a seminar at the largest police conference of the year, to be held in a swanky resort. A resort which just happens to be owned by her husband, Roarke, of course. Even though Eve can't quite see it that way, it's supposed to be at least partly a vacation. But work intrudes in the form of a bloody homicide, and Eve is off and running. The case is complicated by Eve's personal history with the victim - and by the killer's history with Roarke. As danger closes in and the body count rises, Eve must find a way to stop the cycle of violence and revenge, and shove the past back where it belongs.

Poor Eve... spaceflight...

HaHa Michelle...so true. I have a small fear of heights myself. I'm okay as long as I don't look down!

I did really enjoy that one too! It is always to nice to read about how they are always there for each other! I especially liked Eve's reaction to Skinner's suggestion that she would spy on Roarke... haha¸

And again, despite it being a novella, the team core was still very present and enjoyable. Short but complete!

Which was your favorite part?

I enjoyed Eve facing off with Skinner, the motorcycle ride and the excitement around Peabody almost getting blown up.

I haven't reread this one yet...will get to it tomorrow. I like getting them "fresh" in my mind again.

I have petrified of heights, but I don't have problems with flying (except for the claustrophobia in the restroom and my sinuses hate the air pressure changes). About going over water, my uncle has a fear of going over bridges over water and won't drive over them -- and he lives in Oakland!

I don't like crossing the long bridges over water like the one from Manteo to Nags Head off our coast. I'm the same way about going around narrow roads that just hang on the side of a mountain. Just gives me a creepy feeling.

Yeah, bridges were an issue for a long time. I finally had to face my fear and work through it. I once went 25 miles an hour over a 6 mile stretch on a two-lane bridge. My mother was pleading with me to speed up but I couldn't. The backup was terrible.

I don't mind bridges, but I never liked trying to pass semis.

Sandra - we have a mountain pass here in Washington State (White Pass) that is a sheer drop on one side. Very scary@!

Yikes Kirsten! I would have to find a way around that Pass! I get so nervous when we go to the mountains & I'm in the passenger seat with hubby driving...I'm the one looking straight down the side of the mountain. I'm on pins & needles until we get off!

Yeah, White Pass doesn't even have a guardrail. Luckily, it is shut down pretty much from Oct or Nov through April or May.

We have a place in Arizona. It is on the way to Jerome (ghost town) it is a two lane highway and it keeps circling the mountain and you can look down and see hundreds of feet into the canyon. Scary...Terrifying!

I will pull out my Interlude CDs and start listening.

We traveled that road from Prescott to Jerome and my husband freaked out. It's when I learned he had a severe fear of heights. We were with friends and it took all of us to keep him from losing it completely. We bought him that T-shirt they sell in Jerome that says something like "I survived 16 miles and however many turns to Jerome." It was harrowing. Needless to say we didn't complete the trip to the Grand Canyon and took an alternate route back home:)

I'm with your husband, Dee. I would freak out! I would probably have to curl up in the back seat & close my eyes...but then I'd still be freaking out! lol

Yeah, Dallas always seems to run into these sexists. Sad to think they're still around in the 22nd Century.

Only thing is he does bring up an interesting point. With all the cases that Eve's had surely she should be moving up the ranks. I know it's not important to her but still.

I think in future books they cover the fact that she doesn't want to. It would stop her from going into the field.

At this point, Interlude, the first time reader wouldn't know about anything happening or anything Eve feels from future books. It's a bit harder to understand when you only consider what you have read up to this BR book. It's hard to block out information from future books at times but in the buddy reads, we have to remember that we are only privy to information that's happened up to this point.

Oh, no problem at all Kirsten. It's easy to forget that in the BR threads, we only "know" what's happened thus far. It's easy to forget when you've read all of them, isn't it? :)

Lordy , the love between Eve and Roarke just makes me jealous that I don't have it!

I enjoyed Interlude...quick yet good read. I love getting a lot of "Roarke" time in this one. Some great quotes involving him & Eve.

This is one of the novellas I really liked. It had a meaty story and provided lots of history for both Eve and Roarke. And it was exciting.

Perfect description of Eve's feelings on a couple of things:

She had to socialize, attend meetings. She had to - dear Christ - give a speech. And in less than a week, she would have to get back on that fancy flying death trap of Roarke's and face the journey home. LOL...Eve would rather be in battle!

And I always love her thoughts on Roarke:

He was tall and had an innate sort of grace. Like a cat did, she thought. A big, dangerous cat that only pretended to be tame when it suited his mood. His hair was black and thick and longer than her own. It spilled nearly to his shoulders and provided a perfect frame for a face that made her think of dark angels and doomed poets and ruthless warriors all at once. When he looked at her with those hot and wildly blue eyes, the love inside her could spread so fast and strong, it hurt her heart to hold it. He was hers, she thought. Ireland's former bad boy who had made his life, his fortune, his place by hook or - well - by crook.

Aren't Robb's descriptions of him to die for?!!

Starting to re-read this. What strikes me is just how well they know each other. Listening to Eve explain just why Roarke wouldn't have done it is wonderful.

Yes it was Kirsten. They have become very attuned to one another...and possessively protective of each other.

I liked it, I actually had only read the first novella previously so this is my first in this book. It was quick yet she manages to fit everything in a way it didn't feel rushed or cluttered.
Roarke had a nightmare! I like this because it shows he is not as put together as he lets people see. We have seen him get flustered, angry and struggle with his love for Eve and their life. Normally we don't see his internal demons and when we do it almost slides off him like Teflon, but not this time. It was an interesting change from Eve's demons.

I agree, Vera. I guess in a way, it makes Roarke even more human. I enjoyed this novella...liked the story & enjoyed a lot of interaction with Roarke & Eve.

I agree with the comments here... In this little novella, we somehow got a closer look at their relationship. The complete trust, the complete knowledge and the complete faith they have towards each other.

Yes I agree! It was short but the reader learnt a lot about Eve and Roarke.

This one really did have an exciting end. They must have been a sight on that stage, or what was left of it.

This was one of the meatier novellas. There was a lot going on, including important back stories.

It's a good example of why one should read all the novellas...at the very least, you'll get more Roarke & Eve.

It also has one of my very favorite lovemaking scenes for E & R when they get back to their suite after the explosion. Love that scene!
