When Hansel and Gretel come home from their adventures and are talking to their parents, they are conflicted internally. You can tell this because they don't know what to say after running away and knowing that they were the people who cut their heads off (for a good reason of course). When they don't know what to say the author interrupts and tells us their choices, they finally solve their conflicts by changing the subject when it became very awkward.
