So what's the word for when someone says, "Mmm-hmm"? Like they're not really listening or answering. It's not muttering. "Mmm-hmmm," he ___________.

I don't know if there is an actual word for this (there probably is and I just don't know it). I would just write:
"Mmm-hmmm," he sighed.
to show the overall mood of the character. The thing he's responding to probably doesn't elicit a sigh, but he's not really paying attention because he has something else on his mind.
