Everyone has that problem, when you can't think of a word but it's right there on the tip of your tongue but you just can't remember it. Well, problem (hopefully) solved!

If you're having this problem and can't think of the word yourself, try posting here and seeing if any of our members can figure it out!

So what's the word for when someone says, "Mmm-hmm"? Like they're not really listening or answering. It's not muttering. "Mmm-hmmm," he ___________.

murmur?

I went with "grumbled" for now.

Hmph is what I would use.

I don't know if you're still looking for an answer for this, but I'll give my answer anyway.

I don't know if there is an actual word for this (there probably is and I just don't know it). I would just write:

"Mmm-hmmm," he sighed.

to show the overall mood of the character. The thing he's responding to probably doesn't elicit a sigh, but he's not really paying attention because he has something else on his mind.

Try 'hummed'. As in: he hummed his reply.

It's obviously to late, but in case anyone else was wondering, I would have used "mumbled".
