Raquel V (raquelvcc) | 33 comments So, I am not one of the Moderators at all. Like many people I only started reading Brandon Sanderson's books this year, inspired by this very Group. But since no one started a discusion for Shadows of Self, I decided to do it because I REALLY need this community to discuss it with me! I thought we could discuss it in only one post, and put spoiler warnings if there are any.

I'm in chapter 8 so far, and up to chapter 6 I wasn't very excited about this book yet. But (view spoiler) I'm glad to be back in this world now! :)

I would love to know what you all think/thought about it too!

Milou | 15 comments Thank you!!!

I really enjoyed this book. However, i was a little bit disappointed by it. Because i LOVED the original trilogy so much, i guess this one could not live up to my expectations. My main problem was the religious aspect, which is done so well in his other books, but is just too much for me here. Gave it therefore 4*

Sophie | 55 comments Thanks for creating the discussion Raquel! Now we just have to see how much of this book I can actually remember (yes I only read this last month and yes my memory is that terrible)...

Alloy of Law was a great book but it didn't live up to the Mistborn trilogy for me however Shadows of Self was much better (than AOL not original MB)! I loved the references to the original trilogy and how it's all weaving together. The return of the Kandra was really great and that ending was SO emotional. I'm ridiculously excited for the next book in the series.

My only complaint would be that I agree with Milou, the religious aspect was a little too over-the-top for me. However I still really enjoyed it and gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

Douglas (doug_the_hug) | 7 comments I also preferred this to Alloy of Law, although not as much as the original trilogy. I felt there was more sense of large events unfolding than in AoL, and I enjoyed the Cosmere related revelations towards the end of the book. I'm now really looking forward to Bands of Mourning in January.

Raquel V (raquelvcc) | 33 comments You know, I never really compared this to the original Mistborn Trilogy, I think on purpose, as to not get disappointed. Mistborn is my absolute favorite, and Not comparing is the reason why I have been able to enjoy these books so much.

I do think this is far superior than The Alloy of Law in terms of plot - especially as it relates to the Cosmere (so exciting!). The characters, on the other hand, remain as amazing as they always were. Wayne is still my favorite by far, and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters ever. And I absolutely loved Steris' growth as a character here.

I knew there were surprises coming, but boy, @Slick, you were right! (view spoiler)

I was fine with the religious over-the-topness of it (and it really was a little over the top). It really felt like BS intended for religious poeple to relate to some age-old questions about God's power and omnipresence. The thing is, it must have been dull for people who are not religious... Still, I think it was interesting in terms of comparing the characters of human-Sazed and Harmony-Sazed, and really interesting in terms of understanding a society in which the presence of a God is proven and a given.

I'm looking foward The Bands of Mourning in January!!
