If you like good music, try Ayreon. The mastermind behind it has been following a story in his albums. Elegantly articulated. It has both pre and post apocalyptic story. Story from beginning of human race till the end, and how we are adulterated by an alien specie.

Not quite sure about graphic novels, but you can try Oryx and Crake also. It is the first book of a trilogy (MaddAddam).
I would also include The Handmaid's Tale even though it isn't strictly post apocalyptic, leaning towards a more dystopian feel, I feel that it encompasses some of the elements that you are looking for. Both are by Margaret Atwood and she writes beautifully.
