Totally!

I would love to read all about the Marauders era! Stories of James, Lily, Sirius, Remus and Severus at Hogwarts.

message 9: by Saara (new)

Saara Sen-Basuchoudhary Yes, that would be amazing

Bel Cat I'd like to see a Hogwarts series of books based on the teachers' times as pupils. We could see who was friends, who wasn't, get an insight into the old wizarding world - before Voldemort. Was there another dark wizard? Who stopped them?

How cool would that be!?

Luís Fernandes A prequel focusing on the rise of Voldemort to power and the First Wizarding War would be awesome. Another one focusing on Dumbledore's life, specially his story with Grindelwald.

Ravenpaw/claw~Raise a Glass to Freedom (ravenpawclaw) | 677 comments Yes I would like those!

aarifa I also agree with you Bel!

The problem with that would be that too many characters would be doomed.

An earlier one might be interesting. How about a Muggle/wizard couple who are falling in love just as the wizards are deciding to resort to secrecy?

Christine Malec | 56 comments My favourite genre is historical fiction, both reading and writing, so as a big HP fan, I've been writing a fan fiction novel about the founding of Hogwarts. I got curious about what made the Hogwarts four great, so I started imagining.

message 17: by aarifa (new)

aarifa Yes! Maybe we can learn about the history of the Godric Gryffindor, Salazer Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff etc. and how they found the houses.

message 18: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli The problem I would have on that one is that after Mad-Eye's little bit, we would know what happened to most of the Order, and it would mostly involve things going to hell in a handbasket. This does not make for fun reading.

Christine Malec | 56 comments Because I like historical fiction so much, I like to think about prequels that fit into England's history, and the history of magic. I've been wondering about the founding of the Ministry of Magic, and the statute of secrecy. What events were so controversial and dangerous to wizards, that such drastic action was necessary. I think it happened in the 17th century, around the time of the Restoration maybe? A bad period in history for witches, historically speaking.

Mary Catelli A bad period in history for witches, historically speaking.

It would require that the current day wizards have falsified their history, so that they were really in danger then, but hey, plausible.

Or perhaps it was the children who were in real danger. Before they could control it.

Especially how the founders interacted with each other, and how they decided on the qualities they preferred in each house. I feel like something tragic may have happened to Salazar Slytherin that made him so bitter towards Muggles.

message 22: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli Of course, there would have to be some kind of logic to the houses if you did the founders. As they stand, they don't really work, because Slytherin falls between the comic trope of the Evil house, and a serious house that would work logically.

Thinking about this, I asked myself, given that the founders were close friends, and that they were all "great" or at least "legendary," what did the other founders see in Slytherin? My answer is that he was powerful, had some good qualities, like maybe charm, devotion to his friends, but his unusual appearance made him the victim of some exclusion during childhood, and maybe he was a sociopath, someone with no conscience. People like that can be quite charming, but dangerous.

I like that interpretation of Slytherin, but I've also always liked the idea of maybe his intentions were misconstrued, that he never wanted the kind of legacy or reputation that Slytherin house has. Maybe he did something for personal reasons that was misinterpreted as a political stance, something anti-muggle or pro-pureblood, and the record was never set straight. There could be such tragic irony in so many anti-Muggle witches and wizards, Voldemort included, doing terrible things in the name of Salazar Slytherin, when he could have been distraught by the idea. I like the idea of wizard history getting Salazar Slytherin all wrong. Sure, he was a Parselmouth, but he could have been an Uncle Monty from ASOUE type Parselmouth, just really loved his snakes. What was the purpose of the Chamber of Secrets, a prison for the Basilisk maybe? A difficult relationship with Gryffindor, a close friendship with Hufflepuff, a man whose life and choices were taken tragically out of context and used as fuel for hate in centuries to come. Just an idea, maybe it would be interesting if he was nothing like we've been led to expect.

message 25: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli Well, we can come up with all sorts of explanations of how it could work, but those are external to the books -- in which, I think, it doesn't really work.

I love these ideas! 1000 Years is a long time, time for both legends and untruths to grow. We do have the word of the Sorting Hat though, who was there. What drew Godric, who valued honor and bravery, to Salazar, who valued cunning? Great idea about the chamber of secrets!

Christine Malec | 56 comments Filk, is folk music inspired by fantasy literature. In the Half-Blood Prince, we get the chorus of the Ballad of Odo the Hero. Here’s a link to my filk interpretation of the heroism of the legendary Odo, and how it started the four founders on the journey that would eventually lead them to their destiny in the north. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMn48...
