I couldn't find a synopsis for episode 1, but I have an extended one for episode 2 and a short one for episode 3.
* Extended Synopsis Episode 1×02, “The Descent Into Hell is Easy”(airing Jan. 19)
With the knowledge that Valentine is alive and on the hunt for The Mortal Cup, the Institute is on high alert. Not wasting any time, Jace jumps into action and figures Clary’s memories are the key to finding Jocelyn and The Mortal Cup. Unfortunately, Clary’s memories were wiped leaving her without any recollection of this other life that could help her and the team. With only one other option remaining, Jace, Isabelle and a very reluctant Alec take Clary to the City of Bones to face the powerful Silent Brothers.
Meanwhile, Luke continues his search for Clary, and Simon tries to come to terms with his best friend’s new life.
* Synopsis Episode 1×03, Dead Man’s Party (airing Jan. 26) Clary, Jace, Alec and Isabelle work to rescue Simon from the vampire hideout, Hotel du Mort.
YES!I'm super excited! It seems they are being very truthful to the book. I can see the first 3 episodes will be packed with action and lots of things happening! Can't wait for the premiere!
I've posted this first one before but, I'm posting it again on this new thread. I really like this clip, even the song...monsters stuck in your head....monsters under your bed...
Now this song is stuck in my head-lol.

This is so cool! I like the flashing PanDEMONium sign, the dancing with no music and watching the director provide direction to "Jace." I love that Freeform is really promoting the show-worldwide. They're not promoting Recovery Road at all.

I loved everything I've seen so far, even things that weren't in the book. Seems like they are really making an effort to please the fans and make the show succesfull!

I wish I could participate, but I don't think the Freeform website will be open for someone outside of the US. I hope to follow through Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram at least!
One thing that I enjoyed about watching the show was some of the commercials. I know that sounds weird especially because I DVRed it. They showed the trailers for our Books into Movies: The 5th Wave, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and How to Be Single. They showed previews of our Books into TV for the Shannara Chronicles and Recovery Road.
I've watched the first 2 episodes and the second is a slight improvement. I'm not giving my opinion yet, because I want to wait until everybody has a chance to watch :)
I will say...Remember what you are watching... this is cable: FreeForm formally ABC Family. This network is not known for winning awards for acting and writing. The show did exactly what they said they would do: stay somewhat close to book 1 with some liberties and new plot lines to make it interesting and to keep us on our toes. They said they didn't always want us to know what was going to happen next.
This was the pilot and second episode. It's really rare that a pilot is really good. It's their first week at work. Everyone is learning. Look at Seinfeld, Friends, ER, 90210, Everybody Loves Raymond etc...most of these shows still air today, but the first several episodes sucked and they were all almost cancelled and they were on major networks. I'm not saying Shadowhunters will ever be in the same league...it won't, but just enjoy it for what it is...an opportunity to spend more time in the TMI world.
What cracks me up and makes me mad at the same time is all these people that comment that don't realize it's based off a book....they say "why would anybody create a series based on a movie that sucked." I think most of them are guys- lol.
Have fun and tell us what you think.

I actually enjoyed the first episode, the only one released in Netflix so far. Based on what was the premise of the show, I thought it was well done. I even liked some of the new stuff and scenes. The only thing I have to say is about some of the scenes were the acting seemed off, the scene translated as awkward and the dialogues were not very good. But that is a side effect of the things Andrea just mentioned. I think the show will find a pace during the season. The pilot fullfilled its objective and stayed true to the book, much to my delight as a fan of the book series, and I'm looking foward to the rest o the season!
I enjoyed the movie, many hated it but that's cause they read the book first. Well, I didn't know such a book existed. So, I watched the movie, flipped out when it ended and then logged into Amazon and ordered the book. I`m reading it now and yeah, many things were cut out but that's what movies do to books - sometimes they spoil the fun. But I loved the cast. I do love Izzy in the Tv series too. But I don't really like Jase. The movie cast was much better- according to me.
No! I didn't like the first episode. I liked Jocelyn. Powerful mom. Nice touch. But Luke is in the police force??? And the shadow hunters home have people working for them - all dressed in black- did I miss something? Are they all secret agents and the code name is SHADOWHUNTERS ????
Valentine doesn't look evil at all. And don't even get me started on Dorothea. What the hell was that? Now I`m confused. How old is she in the book, the movie and the tv-show??? She looked like Clary's sister in the Tv show.
I agree with Andrea. It's the first epi but it didn't live up to any expectations I had.
They should've stuck to the book and made just a few changes.
I don't know about others, but I don't think I`m gonna watch any more of this show.
But on the other hand, the next episodes seemed really interesting...ugh! I`m in a fix.
But to those who are enjoying the show - Have fun!
Those who didn't - I hear ya!
I was bummed at first that Dorothea was younger too. I liked the Dorothea in the movie...she was perfect, but I know why she is young in the TV show and that's because of advertising demographics. They are trying to reach women ages 12-34 so it made sense that this Dorothea is closer to Clary's age. I liked her by the end and I hope she has screen time in upcoming episodes.
I liked Valentine, Luke and Jace. Clary was flat for me and so was Simon, but I loved the look of both of them, so I'm hopeful their acting will improve. Katherine McNamara (Clary) is a well credited actress. She's even done Broadway several times...so she can do better and she will.
My problem with the show is that I felt disconnected from the characters and there wasn't any "magic", but that's because it was the first episode. I'm still going to watch and I want it to run as long as possible because I know it will only get better and I will grow to love this version of the characters too.
The people dressed in black were working for Valentine they were there to meet with a demon. There were only Shadowhunters in the Institute, other than Simon. I loved the look and feel of the Institute. The interior and glamoured exterior was perfect. I loved how modern it was inside. The training room was awesome.
Overall the ratings were really good for cable. Nearly 2 million tuned in. Hopefully Netflix saw good results as well. How many Nielsen Viewers come back for the second episode will be the test, since they determine the ratings. I've already watched episode 2 and there was some improvement and I'll watch it again. I'm still hopeful that episode 3 will be even better.

I was a little bummed at first about Luke and Dorothea (one of the things that was great about her character was the mystical and kinda creepy old-lady feel about her, but oh well), but I get it, it can't always be exactly like the books. Some things can't be translated to the screen or don't work as well as in the book and have to be adapted. It happens in PLL, True Blood, The Witches of East End, TVD and every other book based series. Even Arrow had some changes to make it work for the general audience, not only the fans of the books (or in this case, comic) - some I loved, some I disliked but learned to live with it. I actually liked Simon, way more than Clary. Alec and Izzy were by far my favorites. As for Jocelyn, Lena Headey still holds my heart, I'm still getting used to this new actress. I'm hoping the acting will improve over the course of the season and the next two episodes covers one of my favorite parts of the book, so I'm excited.
Great points! True Blood and The Vampire Diaries are like their books on super drugs. They are both way over the top crazy compared to their books. I haven't read the other books, but I did watch Witches of East End....I'm still bummed it was cancelled...with a cliff hanger!
All the shows you mentioned are very successful too. So far
Shadowhunters has stayed closer to the book than the others ( True Blood and TVD.) That makes me think that Shadowhunters needs to get a little "crazy" too to be successful and not flat lol...I guess that what keeps most people watching.
I watched a few seasons of TVD and then it just got crazy ridiculous for me. If I can figure out where I left off, I think I'll pick it up again.
I'm a health and weight loss coach and I've done TV interviews. I was told it was good to be nervous because it translates well on the screen ...my PR person said you have to be exuberant in order for any personality to show through on TV. I think that was part of the problem with Katherine M. she needed to act more like she was on Broadway, but she is doing what the director wants her do.

The thing about TV shows is that they go with what the audience wants to see and what gets to the larger public. The series based on books may start off aiming for the book fans, but they need (and want) to reach a larger audience, people who have not read the original material, so they need to adapt the content. That's what happened to TVD, PLL, True Blood and many others. Also, we have the actors dynamic on-screen, which don't always work the way it was originally written. Gossip Girl is a HUGE exemple of that. Blair and Chuck were never meant to be a couple, because on the books it was all about Serena-Nate-Blair, but the on-screen chemistry between Leighton and Ed were so amazing and their scenes worked so well the fans started to want them together and the creators thought it could work. Same for Dan & Serena, Jenny&Nate (although they have a brief romance on the book), Nate x Vanessa and even Dan & Blair.I don't think Shadowhunters will need to get crazy to be sucessful, but we can expect a few changes, especially if we're aiming for a long run for the show. I think the main events will be there, but I can see new pairings, new friendships, new plots and new characters being inserted along the way, and I don't think that's harmful at all. On the other hand, if done well, it adds to the Mortal Instruments universe! And maybe, if the show gets enough success, we get a spin-off based on the Infernal Devices! I WOULD LOVE TO SEE James and Will and Tessa!
On the acting part, I agree with you, Andrea! I also think it helps if the character has a similar personality as the actor, or if the actor can relate in any way to the character, understand its motives and it's thoughts. I think in the pilot Katherine was still a struggling a little to find herself in Clary, so her acting came across a little short, but that will definitely improve over time. I've seen some videos of her work on Broadway and she can do WAY better!
Kudos....Great post. I agree 100%.

I really enjoyed last nights episode. The characters are starting to resonate with me. I loved watching Jace and Izzy take on the vampires, the flying bike was cool and I also enjoyed all the scenes at the The Hotel DuMort with Camille, Simon and Raphael Santiago. I can't wait for the next episode (Raising Hell) with Magnus!

After getting a clue about who may have wiped Clary’s memories, the crew hunts down the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Magnus Bane. With all of the warlocks in hiding from Valentine, the team must lure Magnus out with something he can’t refuse – a killer party and something very valuable. But with emotions running high, more may come out of their meeting with Magnus than just the retrieval of Clary’s memories.
Meanwhile, Simon doesn’t seem to be himself after his recent Downworlder encounter.

I really enjoyed last night's episode! The quality of the show improved a lot, as I thought it would and the actors seemed more involved as well! The Hotel Dumort scenes were my favorite and I loved Camille and Izzie.
It's getting good! I love both of these clips.
Both are from this week's episode #4. The first features Magnus dissing Jace for Alec. It's titled Magnus points at Alec. The second clip is Simon with a new attitude.....Go Simon!

I loved episode 4. Katherine McNamara still bugs me a little she's just not gritty enough...not tough enough...she doesn't come off as street smart like Clary really is. I loved Magnus and Jace they were so awesome!! Simon was too. Next week's episode should be really good when Simon returns to the Hotel Dumort and we get see more of the very evil Valentine. I'm hoping we will see more of Luke too.
So far it's not doing too bad ratings wise for the channel it's on. It has beaten Teen Wolf ever week except this week it was close behind. Hopefully people are watching around the world on Netflix so we get a second season.

Just watched both episode 4 and 5 and I loved it! The acting was a lot better, although there were some scenes that bugged me a little in episode 4. Simon, Alec and Izzie were amazing, BUT MAGNUS. Harry Shum Jr. is so great! AND ALL THE MALEC *___*Episode 5 is the best one yet, even the visual and the effects are better and Katherine McNamara finally seems genuine as Clary. She was coming across a little bratty in epi. 4. Can't wait for episode 6!
The rating are still ok. The last 5 or so weeks, Shadowhunters has either tied or beat Teen Wolf and/or The Shannara Chronicles. They air at the same time so that's good news for Shadowhunters.
I really enjoyed last nights episode and they way they handled Simon's change. I can't wait to watch his story progress next week.
There's a new character that is distantly related to Clary. I don't want to give anything away, but I love how they are related!! And I appreciated a few references to past aka The Infernal Devices. The new character also played a role in an Alex twist. I saw it coming and I like it so far. I am excited to see how it turns out.
I'm totally drawing a blank of the name of the Zombie like creature that made an appearance. That could get interesting.
On the downside Clary is still bugging me, although I'm adjusting.

‘Shadowhunters’ has been Renewed for Season 2. This year's finale airs on April 5.
I don't have a date for season 2, but I hope they will use their hiatus to improve the show.

YAY, I'm so happy the show has been picked up for a second season! I'm a little behind in the episodes (at least 4 to watch), but college is being a pain and I have barely any time and too many tv shows. Hopefully I'll have Easter to binge watch everything.
I'm finally catching up to the series! I'm on episode 7 or 8,I think, and I'll probably finish up to where the show is this weekend! The acting has definetely improved and the plot is spinning away from the books a little but I'm enjoying the additions and changes so far. AND I'M SO EXCITED for the certain event I already know it's coming in a few episodes!
The final episode of this season aired last night. I have really grown to like Dominic Sherwood's portrayal of Jace. He's good. He's Jace all the way. Same goes for Magnus- fabulous!
The show did get better, but it still needs some work. The production feels too low budget. Just based on watching the Magicians, it probably would have been better if aired on Syfy. They are doing it right. The production quality is great and the story is entertaining and some episodes were kind of like an acid trip at times...not that I've ever taken acid-lol.
Back to Shadowhunters...I really enjoyed the departures from the book. And there were some entertaining twists. I'm looking forward to the next season, but crossing my fingers that it will improve. It sounds link the show will air again in Jan. 2017.
In the meantime they are airing a special this Friday “Superfan Suite: Shadowhunters” 10:30/9:30c on Freeform, which includes the cast members from the show talking about all things Shadowhunters.

This just in....Season 3 of Shadowhunters' will have 20 episodes! This season had 13.
I'm guessing it will be split in half. ..like they have done for other shows, unless they stop doing that with their new branding. Too bad we have to wait until 2017.

Yay, I'm so glad it won awards! Although I did not vote for it, I'm happy the show is making success, it means we'll have more seasons!

I wasn't surprised that Matthew Daddario, but I was surprised that the show won.
I just learned that "Lucifer" was based on characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg. Neil Gaiman is everywhere.

More "Shadowhunter" news.
The creator/executive producer Ed Decter has left the show. Apparently this was over creative differences. I'm not sure who the creative differences were with. I'm guessing the network because that's who Dector reports to. He was not at the first table read last week, which indicates some kind of blow up.
The new (not named) showrunner(s) are expected to tweak the series’ creative direction for Season 2 - in a direction that Dector couldn't approve, although he said he also wanted to make some changes.
It's hard to tell what is good and what is bad news, as we don't know what the creative difference were. I'm all for improvement. I know that they have to stray from the book to keep the audience engaged and coming back each week, but I do want the story to flow better and for the changes from the book to make sense with the overall story.
I know this is impossible and too much to ask for..... but too bad Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries/The Originals), or I. Marlene King (Petty Little Liars), Marti Noxon ( Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mad Men and Glee) or another really successful TV executive producer can't take over. Dector has some great movie credits, mainly comedies and nothing like Shadowhunters.
Do you think this is good or bad news?

I don't know if this is good news or bad also, because we don't know what kind of differences these were. I hope that whatever direction they are going to in season 2,it will make the show better and correct some of the things we saw in s1 and hopefully mantaining the essence of the book and the story even with the changes.
1. It is good news. I can't wait for the new season. I think it will be much better.2. They deserved to win!
I noticed that the name changed on IMDB. Now it's 'Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments' I wonder if that was one of the creative differences? I think they want to use each book's title for better PR. Will they finish 'The Mortal Instruments" next year?
I also noticed that you can pay 1.99 per episode to watch on Amazon. Will episodes still air on Netflix if you are out of the country? That's how my BF watched it. I need to find out for her.
Former Smallville showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer have been named as new executive producers aka showrunners of Shadowhunters.
Additionally, Matt Hastings (The Originals) recently joined Shadowhunters as executive producer/series director.
I think all the new additions are a great sign. I loved Smallville, although I must admit, I didn't watch the last few seasons, but only because I was too busy. The Originals is doing well too.
I believe they started filming and I will post updates as they become available.
Karen- I haven't read any news about what the name change might mean. I believe Amazon is only available after the series ends for the year. Netflix has the rights to air the series the day after it airs in the US. It worked well for Shadowhunters ratings, so I doubt that will change. I will let you know if it does, but I don't expect it to.

We have a new Shadowhunter:

Nick Sagar will play Victor Aldertree, a Clave Representative. He arrives at the New York Institute in the aftermath of the season finale.
"Thank you for all the kind messages! It's a honor to be part of the #ShadowHunters family." "Can't wait for you all to see what's to come." (From Sagar 's Twitter feed.)
He's a cutie for sure. What do you think about this new character?
If you were a writer for the show, what story-line would you write?
