message 11: by Claire (last edited Apr 24, 2014 11:19AM) (new)

Claire (claire6452) | 718 comments I'm actually fortunate in that I have already found a nice selection of books for this challenge. My problem is that I can't decide which ones to read! There are about five that I'm considering for the book published the year I was born (1952), and my really difficult choice will be for a book by an author born that year.

I have Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club and Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and I don't know which way to go on that.

Any votes on which one I should choose?

message 12: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 24, 2014 12:30PM) (new)

I am actually reading The Joy Luck Club for a book published the year I was born, I'm really looking forward to reading it. I have read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxyand found it ok. It had some funny moments but I didn't like it as much as everyone else seems too.
I think it mostly depends on what you are in the mood for: ridiculous humour (Hitchhikers) or drama with some humour thrown in (joy luck club).

LynnB Claire wrote: "I have Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club and Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and I don't know which way to go on that. Any votes on which one I should choose? "

I agree with Kelsi. I enjoyed The Joy Luck Club but I never have understood what people see in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I didn't like it at all.

message 14: by Claire (last edited Apr 24, 2014 09:22PM) (new)

Claire (claire6452) | 718 comments Thanks, Kelsi and Lynn! I was kind of leaning in that direction myself, but I've heard so many people say that they love Hitchhiker that I wasn't sure.

I'll probably get around to that one at some point, but for now I'll probably go with The Joy Luck Club.

My books for this challenge are:
1. Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut
2. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

Maureen | 238 comments Can you sign me up for 2?

Finally an excuse to read Beter again. It is written by a Dutch Olympic marathon swimmer, Maarten van der Weijden (born March 31, same birthday as mine). A beautiful book about his struggle with cancer and his road to the Olympics. I loved it. He's my hero!

Now I have to find a book that is published in my birthyear (1989).

I try both, so two for me.

Meimei | 101 comments Reija wrote: "I have little trouble find those authors born with same date, do you check wikipedia or something else?
Hi, yeah, I had some trouble too, because I don't know any authors born in 1996... I would suggest trying wikipedia page with date of your birthday and then look for "author" or "writer" in the "Births" section. Or I also tried googling "November 16 birthday author/writer". Hope that helps and good luck :)

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)
