I just sent a heavy box full of books 1,886 miles across the country. It was 40 lbs. 7.0 oz. to be exact. Priority rate would have been over $96, but media rate was only $21.21.

Jodell (jodell59) what type of books do you suggest for prisoners in a super max facility. and how do you ask if you can send dontations or know if they accept them?

It really depends on the facility. I've heard of some minimum security prisons that couldn't do hardbacks, and maximum security prisons that accept them.

Did you have a specific unit (prison) in mind? If so, let me know either on this thread, or message me directly. I'd be glad to give them a try. It's always best to contact the facility directly and find out their donation guidelines. You can't always guarantee to get through, but if you know the unit, you can look them up online, get a phone number, and ask to speak to the prison librarian. They may not have voicemail, so it may take a few phone calls (but again, I'd be happy to make those calls if you had a specific unit in mind).

Also, donating to a prison library vs. a specific inmate is very different. There are much stricter guidelines for donating to a specific inmate. For that, I suggest getting them to find out the guidelines. They'd be able to ask the librarian directly.

In short, it varies so much from prison library to prison library, that it's best to contact them directly.

In general, popular fiction almost always works. Racially or sexually graphic material is almost always no good to donate.
