Here's a challenge that looks kind of fun! Just respond to this topic every time you've marked off one of the required books so we can all keep track with you!

The image looked fine when I previewed it, but now it looks like it can't be read. So here is the text.

A book published this year.
A book you can finish in a day.
A book you've been meaning to read.
A book recommended by your local librarian or bookseller.
A book you should have read in school.
A book chosen for you by your spouse, partner, sibling, child, or BFF.
A book published before you were born.
A book that was banned at some point.
A book you previously abandoned.
A book you already own but have never read.
A book that intimidates you.
A book that you have already read at least once.

Karissa (madam_muffins) | 10 comments A book published this year: Owlcrate covers this I believe
A book you can finish in a day: Piper Green and the Fairy Tree by Ellen Potter
A book you've been meaning to read: The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews Edwards
A book recommended by your local librarian or bookseller: Arya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol
A book you should have read in school: The Handmaid's Tale
by Margaret Atwood
A book chosen for you by your spouse, partner, sibling, child, or BFF: I can't for the life of me remember the title- but it's about Native Medicine women in history.
A book published before you were born: Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
A book that was banned at some point: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
A book you previously abandoned: Newsflesh Trilogy, #1 by Mira Grant I got 3/4 of the way done with Feed before I gave up. Not what I was expecting.
A book you already own but have never read: The Rot & Ruin Series by Jonathan Maberry I technically own it, never read it though! ;)
A book that intimidates you: Anything that isn't fiction. So I'll get a second recommendation from the Baby Daddy
A book that you have already read at least once: Lord of the Rings Trilogy by JRR Tolkein

Jennifer Wheeler Ok, I should be able to do some of these, but maybe not all, lol. A book published this year will be an issue because I don't buy hardcover (and I don't borrow in general). Maybe I could bend it to include a book released in paperback this year? I haven't gone into a book store or library in over a year, so getting a recommendation from there might be an issue as well, lol. I have a friend who works at a library though, so maybe I'll read a recommendation from her. What if a book fits multiple aspects of the challenge? For example, Gone With the Wind was a book that I could have read in school (I chose Shogun instead), and is also a book written/published before I was born. A book I've already read feels like a bit of a waste when I have so many waiting to be read, but I'm willing to pick a shorter book that I enjoyed - Bitten. Which I could also probably finish in one day. Oh! Or The Call of the Wild - I've read it a zillion times, but not in a long while, and it's only like 63 or so pages, lol. So, does each category have to have it's own book, or can we combine?

Ooh...good question. I think if it's possible to do one book for each line that's the way to go. But at the end of the year if that hadn't happened and you did indeed read a book that covers multiple categories count it. :p As for the released this year. They also sometimes release books straight to paperback. So that might be an option? I don't think there are any definite rules for this thing. :) Its about encouraging participation and encouraging reading. Trying some things outside our normal.

message 7: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Wheeler Ok, sounds good. I'm willing to take a crack at it

message 8: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Wheeler Oh, another thing - define "intimidates". I've never come across a book that intimidates me length or complexity-wise. So can intimidate maybe mean one with a storyline that may frighten me? For example, I have Jaws on my TBR shelf, and I'm terrified of sharks, lol.

message 9: by Karissa (new)

Karissa (madam_muffins) | 10 comments For the intimidate I picked a book I know will be a struggle for me to read personally.

message 10: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Wheeler Finished my "read in a day" book! Actually the first time I've ever used Kindle, and I chose this book because a friend harassed me to, lol. It's called Around the World in 80 Men. You guessed it, very explicit material! But it was actually pretty good, and some parts were quite amusing. I might be tempted to download the other books in the series.

message 11: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Wheeler Finished Autumn: The Human Condition for the "already own but haven't read yet" book! Of course this actually applies to almost all of the books I've chosen for this challenge, lol. On to the next book - recommended by my 12yr old son

Jennifer Wheeler How is everyone doing with the challenge??? I've just finished my 3rd book - Warriors: Into the Wild, by Erin Hunter. Recommended to me by my 12yr old son, Chase. It's definitely a kid's book, but it's well written. I may eventually read the rest of the series (Chase would be disappointed if I didn't, lol), but for now I'm moving onward with the next book I've chosen for the challenge - Gone With the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell.

message 16: by Khirsten (new)

Khirsten Iversen (bookishsarcasm) | 3 comments I think we need to clarify the challenge...

Just so you guys know: You cannot count books you've ALREADY read. It has to be ones that you read in 2016. NOT past books that you've already read unless it specifically says so :)

message 17: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Wheeler Finished my 5th book in the 2016 Reading Challenge! I chose The Catcher in the Rye as "a book I should have read in school". I gave it 1 star. It's that wretched.

message 18: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Wheeler Finished my 6th book in the reading challenge! Island of the Blue Dolphins was just as good this time around, as when I first read it in my youth. I'm probably going to read Germinal as well, so I'll have read 2 books for the "book you've read at least once".

Jennifer Wheeler I was starting to wonder if I was the only one participating the the challenge, lol. I only have 2 more books to go, then I'm done. :)

message 21: by Khirsten (new)

Khirsten Iversen (bookishsarcasm) | 3 comments I would participate more but in such a picky reader that I am straying away from the constraints I guess of the challenge. I love reading but what I want, when I want lol.

message 22: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Wheeler I was lucky enough to be able to find books that I already wanted to read that fit within each challenge parameter. I'm having a rough time with the one I'm on now though. There's a reason I abandoned this book the first time. Ugh.

message 23: by Karissa (new)

Karissa (madam_muffins) | 10 comments I'm in such a reading slump right now I haven't opened a book (outside of work) in about a month.

message 24: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Wheeler Oh no! That stinks. I've slowed down a bit since completing this challenge, but I'm still excited to get to the rest of the books on my TBR shelf.

message 25: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Heryford | 9 comments Mod
I think I've completed some of these. A book I've read at least once. A book I can read in a day. A book I've been meaning to read. I'm going to have to double check if I've read a book published this year and a book i previously abandoned. That's almost half of them. Considering I totally slacked the first few months, not bad.

message 26: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Wheeler Not that long now till the end of the year! How's everyone doing with the challenge?

I'm pretty sure I'm doing horrendously. I haven't been reading much lately. :( I have definitely read a book published this year and a book I can finish in a day and a book I've read before. I may have even read a book I already owned but hadn't read. As well as a book I previously abandoned. At least I think I have....
