Citizen: An American Lyric gets a strong recommendation. Other poets mentioned are Natasha Trethewy, Cathy Park Hong and Tracy K. Smith.

I'm going with Prelude to Bruise. Edit: The first two chapters of Prelude to Bruise are about the abuse the author received at the hands of his father for cross dressing. Reading it/feeling it was too painful to continue.
Teresa, did you ever find another book of poetry? I just read Poisoned Apples: Poems for You, My Pretty and really loved it.
I just read What the Living Do: Poems by Marie Howe. Definitely a good fit for me and for the challenge.
I read Alien vs. Predator, which has some cool language in it, but which overall I was not down with.
