Well, the end of Charlotte's Web, but that was when I was very young. I don't tend to cry much from books. A half a tear did escape my eye at the end of The Road.

This header confuses me. What does it mean, maybe we can rewrite it?

message 5: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 185 comments I might not have cried all day but the two books that just outright broke my heart are The Amber Spyglass (third book in His Dark Materials) and The Sweet Gum Tree.

C. | 217 comments When someone asks which book made them cry this is the one that is most often mentioned~ Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

and ~ To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

a list of saddest books....

Sam's Letters to Jennifer

Lots of others make me cry too, but these ones are on the 'tissues mandatiry' list.

message 10: by Anie_chan (new)

Anie_chan | 76 comments Well, Angels' Blood is the book I read when I wanted to cry. I admit, there's other books that would give me bigger puffy eyes but truthfully, I forgot their titles.

Gianna ⚔️ (giannadim187) | 33 comments I was practically sobbing by the end of Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Much stronger than the movie.

message 12: by Peter (new)

Peter Meilinger | 469 comments I'll second Where The Red Fern Grows. I was a tough and manly 13 year old when I read it, and I congratulated myself when the first sad part happened because I didn't cry. Figured I had it licked, but then the second sad part came along and I cried like a baby who'd just been pepper sprayed.

Another good one was Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was by Barry Hughart. There were a number of tear-jerking moments in that one, several of which really had no bearing on the plot. My favorite was the plan to give an unhappy ghost peace, in which we learn that the Sword Dance is more powerful than curses or even death itself.

No doubt about it; some of those childrens/YA animal story books can just rip your heart out. I've never recovered from reading Charlotte's Web :D

I recently saw the movie version of "Red Ferns" and felt absolutely ill afterwards. WHY WHY WHY???

The Animal Planet had a Meerkat's series a few years back and it caused national outrage when the absolute genius and head meerkat's death was shown in gory detail. The show was aimed at young children and quite a few were traumatized no doubt. I boycotted that show afterwards and it soon went off the air.

Scott Nude Men by Amanda Filipacchi
Note: It also made me laugh.

message 19: by Mary (new)

Mary (marissa_214) | 131 comments I'll 3rd Where the Red Fern Grows, but oddly, another book that made me cry was A Time to Kill. I am not sure if it was the book or some things that were going on when I read it, and I've never re-read it, but I'm curious if anyone else cried when reading it!

Oh, I cried in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,

I don't recall any books making me cry since then, but I very rarely cry.

Dewey The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron

message 22: by Amy (Other Amy) (new)

Amy (Other Amy) | 198 comments I rarely cry at books. I count it as a victory if I even tear up. These hit the mark last year:
A Monster Calls
The Arrival
City of Saints and Madmen (Might just be me, and it helps if you've read This Is Water: Some Thoughts, Delivered on a Significant Occasion, about Living a Compassionate Life by DFW.)

This one actually made me cry a few years ago:
Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir

And nobody has mentioned the counterpart to Where the Red Fern Grows:
Old Yeller

message 25: by Merrilee (new)

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments The Christmas Shoes
A Walk to Remember (the only Nicholas Sparks book I will read. Most of his end in tears.)
Wonder made me cry, but in a good way.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH's movie (The Secret of NIMH) used to make be bawl like a baby when I was four. The book was a little better in the crying department when I read it around 8 or so.
If I Stay
The Fault in Our Stars
The Divergent series
The Hunger Games series

That's all I've got off the top of my head.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 140 comments Oh! Where the Red Fern Grows! *waaah* and also Bridge to Terabithia!! (As far as movies go in the juvenile-character genre, My Girl works every time!)

I have a tear-jerker shelf. I only have 40 (of over 1400) books on it.
*Speak
*The Second Summer of the Sisterhood!!! — I had to put down the book to bawl for like 30 minutes!)
*The Alison Rules — I don't remember anything about this book other than it made me cry a lot.
*Saving Francesca
*A Mango-Shaped Space — This book is really fascinating for other non-tearjerker-ish things.

What's up with all the YA books? Hmmmm... well then. I have some romance novels on there too... You can check out my shelf if you want.

What a great idea the "tear jerker" shelf is - I'm going to start one of my own.

Michele | 2488 comments The Amber Spyglass (but it's third in the series and you have to read the others first)

Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry always makes me cry in several places: The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire, The Darkest Road.

Flowers for Algernon

The Road

Watership Down

The Remains of the Day

message 30: by ``Laurie (new)

``Laurie (laurielynette) The Yearling : The one definitely belongs on the tear jerker shelf - I felt physically ill after reading this one. If you're not an animal lover it might not affect you the same way though.

I just remember another book I recently read that hurt to read:

The Yellow Birds

The ending of Pullman's series - The Amber Spyglass - tore me up for days. I don't think I've bawled that hard at the ending of a book since. I have the quotes from Will and Lyra on my pinterest page and I always tear up when I read them. Gah...heart sore.

The ending of the book Nobody's Damsel always makes me cry. Kind of vaguely mystery, but only vaguely. It's the second book in a series, but I think you should be able to read it as a stand alone.

message 36: by Ella (new)

Ella | 15 comments 2 books that sort of sent me reeling.. But I Love Him by Amanda Grace Entangled by Cat Clarke
This was a review I posted on But I Love Him--> I read this book a long time back, when I wasn't on GR, hence the late review. This is one of the few book that almost sent me into permanent depression. I hate stories that aren't HEA. And had I been on GR back when I read it, I would have given it a whooping...1 Star(because there isnt an option for 0 stars) but now that I look back, I do believe it deserved a 5star review .it left scars on my fairy-tale-loving heart. It left a deep, albeit sorrowful, impact on me. I hate the story but it was very well written. Another book just as heart breaking was Entangled by Cat Clarke.
Warning: Not a HEA Story Write down a few happy memories of yours to read after you finish this book because you will need them to remind yourself that your life is not over. And definitely worth living inspite of how you feel at the end.

message 43: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) | 13 comments I guess I'd say none, not that I'm an emotionless robot, (though it could be that!) but more due to the fact that as immersed as I ever am I'm always aware that it is a book, and as I don't read non-fiction, even the most tragic story is just that, a story one that I can step away from without emotional residue. I do tear up at movie adaptations of books sometimes so I guess my emotional response is more visual than literal.

message 44: by Kikki (new)

Kikki (kikki-not-kiki) Bridge to Terebithia ruined me as a kid, i was a sobbing mess

Same with when ny 5th grade class read Where the Red Fern grows

message 49: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) I'm really surprised no-one has mentioned The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

That book made me sob at several different points.

Also Mitch Albom's books in general make me cry but The Five People You Meet in Heaven really hit a spot for me.

I'm a crier though but I found both these to be very very poignant.

message 50: by Leni Linnéa (new)

Leni Linnéa (linneanb1) | 4 comments Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma made me cry so much! An amazing book but also with a very different theme and storyline than most books. This is the only book I have heard of that's addressing incest.
