Well, the end of Charlotte's Web, but that was when I was very young. I don't tend to cry much from books. A half a tear did escape my eye at the end of The Road.

perhaps what you want

a list of saddest books....

Sam's Letters to Jennifer
Lots of others make me cry too, but these ones are on the 'tissues mandatiry' list.

Another good one was Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was by Barry Hughart. There were a number of tear-jerking moments in that one, several of which really had no bearing on the plot. My favorite was the plan to give an unhappy ghost peace, in which we learn that the Sword Dance is more powerful than curses or even death itself.

No doubt about it; some of those childrens/YA animal story books can just rip your heart out. I've never recovered from reading Charlotte's Web :D

I recently saw the movie version of "Red Ferns" and felt absolutely ill afterwards. WHY WHY WHY???
The Animal Planet had a Meerkat's series a few years back and it caused national outrage when the absolute genius and head meerkat's death was shown in gory detail. The show was aimed at young children and quite a few were traumatized no doubt. I boycotted that show afterwards and it soon went off the air.

Oh, I cried in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,
I don't recall any books making me cry since then, but I very rarely cry.

A Monster Calls
The Arrival
City of Saints and Madmen (Might just be me, and it helps if you've read This Is Water: Some Thoughts, Delivered on a Significant Occasion, about Living a Compassionate Life by DFW.)
This one actually made me cry a few years ago:
Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir
And nobody has mentioned the counterpart to Where the Red Fern Grows:
Old Yeller

A Walk to Remember (the only Nicholas Sparks book I will read. Most of his end in tears.)
Wonder made me cry, but in a good way.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH's movie (The Secret of NIMH) used to make be bawl like a baby when I was four. The book was a little better in the crying department when I read it around 8 or so.
If I Stay
The Fault in Our Stars
The Divergent series
The Hunger Games series
That's all I've got off the top of my head.

I have a tear-jerker shelf. I only have 40 (of over 1400) books on it.
*Speak
*The Second Summer of the Sisterhood!!! — I had to put down the book to bawl for like 30 minutes!)
*The Alison Rules — I don't remember anything about this book other than it made me cry a lot.
*Saving Francesca
*A Mango-Shaped Space — This book is really fascinating for other non-tearjerker-ish things.
What's up with all the YA books? Hmmmm... well then. I have some romance novels on there too... You can check out my shelf if you want.

What a great idea the "tear jerker" shelf is - I'm going to start one of my own.

Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry always makes me cry in several places: The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire, The Darkest Road.
Flowers for Algernon
The Road
Watership Down
The Remains of the Day

I just remember another book I recently read that hurt to read:
The Yellow Birds

It was the most heart wrenching story I have read in my life.

The ending of Pullman's series - The Amber Spyglass - tore me up for days. I don't think I've bawled that hard at the ending of a book since. I have the quotes from Will and Lyra on my pinterest page and I always tear up when I read them. Gah...heart sore.

The part that killed me was (view spoiler) . I was so horrified and distraught by the very idea.
The ending of the book Nobody's Damsel always makes me cry. Kind of vaguely mystery, but only vaguely. It's the second book in a series, but I think you should be able to read it as a stand alone.

This was a review I posted on But I Love Him--> I read this book a long time back, when I wasn't on GR, hence the late review. This is one of the few book that almost sent me into permanent depression. I hate stories that aren't HEA. And had I been on GR back when I read it, I would have given it a whooping...1 Star(because there isnt an option for 0 stars) but now that I look back, I do believe it deserved a 5star review .it left scars on my fairy-tale-loving heart. It left a deep, albeit sorrowful, impact on me. I hate the story but it was very well written. Another book just as heart breaking was Entangled by Cat Clarke.
Warning: Not a HEA Story Write down a few happy memories of yours to read after you finish this book because you will need them to remind yourself that your life is not over. And definitely worth living inspite of how you feel at the end.

Yes indeed, The Color Purple did touch a raw spot for me as well.

Same with when ny 5th grade class read Where the Red Fern grows
I also cried in order of the Phoenix and deathly hallows and half blood prince
I actually threw my half blood prince book across the room screaming no because i was so upset haha but i wqs a lot younger
I cried readibg Lord of the Rings too actually, started around Boromirs death then kinda went off and on through the whole trilogy

I had forgotten all about that dog *sob*

That book made me sob at several different points.
Also Mitch Albom's books in general make me cry but The Five People You Meet in Heaven really hit a spot for me.
I'm a crier though but I found both these to be very very poignant.
