Alright.-----
Phoenix checked the time on his phone as he got up. It was almost noon and he had just woken up. He smiled faintly and sent a message to Maya. 'Good afternoon, or almost afternoon.' He sent as he pulled on a clean t shirt and jeans before leaving his room.
--
Theresa sighed softly as she walked through the hallways to her father's office. Apparently she was getting a new guard or something to keep her safe. She didn't think that she needed it but her father did so she chose to just do what he wanted. Tessa knocked softly on the door to the office.
'Maybe..' Phoenix sent back. After a moment, he added. 'Yes.' He smiled lightly, heading to the kitchen. He liked to read sometimes, but not like Maya did. But give him anything to do with music and he'd definitely be into it. 'I'm coming over in like 20 minutes. I just need to find my car keys and my earbuds.' He sent as he grabbed a leftover piece of pizza from the fridge. Nix sat on the counter and ate his pizza. --
The man, Sebastian nodded. He looked over at the door when he heard a knock. "Come in Tess." He called out. Theresa pushed the door open and entered the room. She noticed the other guy who was probably the new person assigned to protect her but didn't say anything. She sat down in a chair opposite her father's desk.
"Tessa, this is Mr. Wendle. He's the new one assigned to protect you. Mr. Wendle, my daughter Tessa." Sebastian introduced them. Theresa nodded, looking at Jay. "Nice to meet you Sir." She said quietly.
Phoenix smiled and rolled his eyes as he read her message. He didn't send a response, putting his phone in his pocket. He hummed to himself as he finished off his slice of pizza. Nix hopped off the counter and headed back to his room to grab his car keys and earbuds which luckily were sitting side by side at his desk. He put the earbuds in his pocket and walked out of the house. He locked the front door before getting into his car. His car was an old beat up matte black Camaro that he had spent a few weeks fixing up. It still had trouble running sometimes but phoenix didn't care. He loved it. ---
Tessa nodded back at him. She bit her lip as she listened to her father and Sebastian. "Alright. Both of you are dismissed.." Sebastian told them. Tessa smiled faintly and stood up, giving her father a kiss on the cheek before heading back out into the hallway. She figured that she probably should wait for Jay, unsure if he knew his was around. It was a maze of confusing hallways if you were a newcomer and had never been inside before.
Phoenix started the car with a loud rumble. Smiling at the sound, he drove to Maya's house which wasn't too far away. He knew the way and could probably walk or drive there with his eyes closed. After a few minutes, he pulled up in front of her house and killed the engine. Phoenix got out and walked around to the back door. He opened the back door and came inside, looking around for Maya.--
"Do you need someone to show you around?" Tessa asked politely. She wasn't going to be rude or mean and just leave him lost in some hallway. She really wanted to head back to the library where she was before but figured she should be nice to Jay at least. Theresa bit her lip, looking around
Phoenix smiled and wandered into the kitchen. He sat on the counter. "No thanks, I ate pizza not too long ago.." He said, watching her make her omelette and swinging his legs back and forth. "I don't know. I came over hoping you'd have ideas." He shrugged. Phoenix was only really close with Maya. He didn't have any real other friends but he didn't mind it being that way. --
"Alright," Tessa nodded. "One thing first though, please, you don't have to call me miss. You can call me Theresa or Tessa or Tess or whatever but you don't need to call me miss." She told him with a light smile. She waited a moment before turning and walking down the hall to the library, knowing he wouldn't be far behind. Theresa smiled, reaching the library and pushing open the large doors. She wandered through the many rows to the back where there was Windows. She had set up her own little reading nook in one of the ledges or windowsills.
Phoenix rolled his eyes at her as she put hot sauce on her omelette. "I should be asking you if you want to go, considering you were the one invited.. So, do you?" He asked her. Nix stuck his tongue out at her but then took the bite she offered. He smiled at her but then shook his head. "Thanks, just what I needed, a bunch of spicy stuff in my mouth to wake me up." He muttered sarcastically. He honestly didn't like spicy food like she did. ----
Tessa had sat down in her little spot and picked up a book from the stack on the floor. She stretched her legs out, taking over the entire windowsill and started to read. She didn't really care where Jay was or what he did, knowing he probably wouldn't be far. She hadn't known about the death threat against her, her father choosing not to tell her.
Phoenix hopped off the counter, getting himself a glass of water. He held another glass out to her as if asking if she wanted some too. "We always can go for a little while and then sneak out and leave. Besides, I'll be there and if Kent tries anything, I can always deck him.." He said, smiling at her. He bit his lip lightly. ---
Tessa kept reading. Every now and then she'd smile or glare at the book, based on how the characters acted. She sighed softly, eventually putting the book down and looking at Jay. "Why'd you take this job if you don't mind me asking?" She asked, tilting her head and watching him.
Phoenix filled the second glass and handed it to her with a smile. "I'm taller than him, and he's really not that scary. He's not very bright either." He shrugged, biting his lip. "Alright," Phoenix nodded, agreeing to stay by her. He wrapped his arms around her, smiling lightly. "When is this party?" He asked out of curiosity. ---
"Yeah. That makes sense." Tess nodded. "Why choose to be a guardian though?" She hoped he wasn't going to get annoyed by her questions. She was just curious to learn more about him, after all he was supposed to protect her. "If you get annoyed by my questions, just tell me."
"Who said I had to be nice to him?" Phoenix asked with a smirk. "I really don't care that much, but it might be good to know so we know when to go." He shrugged. Nix looked out the window and nodded. "Okay. I recommend putting shoes on first though." He said, glancing at her bare feet. He looked back at her and smiled. ---
Tessa nodded. "That makes sense." She replied. She bit her lip, trying to think if she had any more questions she wanted to ask. A part of her wanted to ask about the last girl but the rest of her didn't really care. Her father wouldn't have let him come if he didn't trust Jay. She chose to trust her father's judgement, it wasn't like she had much choice not to.
Phoenix waited patiently for her, biting his lip. He checked his phone even though he knew nobody would be texting him. He sighed and put it back in his pocket. Nix smiled when Maya came back. "Okay." He nodded. He wasn't that excited to go to a party with a bunch of people he didn't know or talk to but he'd do anything for Maya. ---
"Let me guess. She was annoying and whined or complained about every little thing?" Tessa guessed, watching him. She knew that a lot of other princesses or royals were like that and hated it. "The same goes for you. You can ask me anything and I'll answer." She informed him. Tessa didn't want him to be just another guard that she didn't know. She wanted to actually be friends with him, that made it easier when he would constantly be there.
"Sure." Nix shrugged. He smiled lightly. "Do you actually want to walk or am I giving you a piggy back ride?" He asked with a smirk. Nix wrapped one arm around her waist, tickling her side. He looked over at her. He used his free hand to brush the hair out of his eyes. ---
"I figured." She muttered. Tess knew that her father would've done something like that. "But all the information you got, not all of it is the truth." She told him, biting her lip. She sometimes would go places that she really didn't like to go or hang out with people she didn't really like so her father would think that those people and places were her favorite, even if they weren't. She didn't like people knowing everything about her.
Nix grinned. He let her push him before crouching down. "I'm allowed to tickle you. It's in my job description as your best friend." He told her as he waited for her to hop on his back. He bit his lip lightly. ---
"Well you don't have to worry about stuff like that with me. I don't keep bad stuff hidden from my father. I don't go around and secretly destroy stuff or anything like that." She told him. "All those supposed friends you learned about. They're just people I know. They aren't friends." Tessa said, biting her lip. She leaned back against the window.
Nix smiled. "I'll bring my copy of the job description tomorrow." He held onto her legs so she wouldn't fall and stood up straight again. "Alright." He walked toward the park and their hidden spot. Nix looked around, biting his lip as he walked. ---
"Honestly? Nobody who's actually real." Tessa admitted honestly. "All the people i hang out around so my father will be happy. They all treat me differently because of who my father is and who I am because of that." She told him, biting her lip nervously. He wondered what he'd think about that.
Phoenix smiled at her. "Okay. Whatever you say," he muttered, biting his lip. Nix walked up to the tree, quickly and easily climbing up to their spot. He held his hand out to pull her up. "Come on up." He smiled brightly, looking at her.---
"You should go. After all, they're your friends. I don't mind tagging along, you should get to see your buddies and I don't want to be the one that keeps you from seeing them.." Tessa told him. She wanted him to be able to see his friends, and she wouldn't mind going with him so he could.
Phoenix sat in his spot, looking at her and smiling. "I don't care. It's your choice. If you want to go, we can. If not, we can go do something else or just watch movies or something." He shrugged, biting his lip. He ran a hand through his hair. ----
Tessa shrugged. "I think you should get to see your friends. Them Being in the military, that's not exactly a safe job. I honestly would not mind going with you to meet up with them." She explained.
Phoenix smiled and nodded. "Alright." He was silent while Maya called Sara, biting his lip. He picked a leaf off of the tree and carefully shredded it into bits, lost in his own thoughts. "Okay good." He looked over at Maya. "Hmmm. What movies to watch?" --
"I don't mind Jay.." Tessa told him. "Seriously, you should get to see your friends." She smiled lightly. "Any other questions that you'd like to ask me?" She asked, changing the subject before he could protest more.
((Sure! That's a good idea.))
"Sure." Phoenix nodded. He smiled at her. "We can go and have a marathon of movies." He loved that they'd do things like this. Just have a movie marathon because why not. It meant they got to spend more time together. He bit his lip lightly, watching her. ---
"Not right now." Tessa shrugged. She picked up the book she was reading, turning back to how she was sitting before. She glanced at a clock to check the time, wondering how long before they'd have to go down to dinner. They had about half an hour so she went back to reading her book, almost at the end of it.
"Yep. We can watch movies all day and probably half the night too." Phoenix smiled at her. "I know. And I love you too." He replied. He knew that Maya meant the I love you in a friend way but still, hearing those words made his heart beat a little bit faster. "Why are you yawning? Did you get up early?" He teased. ---
"Hmm. Oh yeah. That's fine.." She closed the book after marking her page and stood up. She left the book on the windowsill. "I just need to go grab my coat." She told him. "I'll be right back." She said, forgetting for a moment that he was supposed to always be with her. She quickly went to her room to grab a jacket.
"5 am? Are you insane?" He asked, rolling his eyes. Nix nodded. "Sure." He agreed. He shifted, taking off the zip up hoodie he was wearing and offered it to her. "You're always cold." He teased. "Must be that bit of vampire blood in you." Phoenix stuck his tongue out at her. ---
Tessa bit her lip lightly. She went into her room, leaving the door open just a crack. She walked over to her closet, opening it and taking out a plain black leather jacket. She pulled it on and pulled her hair out so it wasn't stuck under the collar of the jacket. Tessa closed the closet and walked out of her room, almost jumping when she saw him. "Ready?" She asked, tilting her head.
"You are so not pale. If anything, I'm the pale one." He replied, rolling his eyes at her. "Okay. Well, if you'd get out of my lap, I could jump down and then you can jump." He told her with a smile. Phoenix waited for her to get up so he could jump. ---
Tessa rolled her eyes. "Yeah. I know. Doesn't mean I'm used to it yet though." She said as she walked out to his car with him. She got in the car, "thanks." She buckled her seatbelt and watched him as he drove toward the airport. "I figured they would be. You don't seem like you'd hang out with idiots." Tessa responded, biting her lip. "Could you teach me how to drive someday?" She asked randomly, never having learned because of her father's wishes.
Phoenix smiled. He jumped down with ease, landing in a crouch. He stood up straight again, waiting for her. He was ready to catch her in case she fell when she landed. Nix caught her as she slipped, his arms wrapping around her. "You alright?" He asked gently. After a moment, he spoke again. "Somedays I think we need to get you a ladder for this tree.." He mumbled with a smirk. ---
Tessa nodded. "Okay." She bit her lip lightly, getting out of the car after Jay did. She looked just like any other girl, wearing plain blue jeans, boots, a t shirt, and her leather jacket. She stayed by the car, smiling lightly as she watched Jay with his friends. Tessa bit her lip and walked up to them when Jay waved her over. She heard one of the guys comments but ignored it.
Phoenix smiled. "Yeah. It's a Good thing that I'm useful for more than just piggy back rides." He said. "Seriously?!" He called out after her as he took off running. He stayed a little behind her, letting her win at first. Nix smirked, knowing a shortcut. He quickly turned down a side alley and kept running. ---
Tessa smiled faintly. She glanced over at Jay and shrugged. "I'm just a friend of his." She said, definitely not wanting them to know who she was. Tessa noticed the difference in how Jay was acting. It was nice to see him act like a normal guy with friends, instead of him constantly being on edge and watching to keep her safe. She had only known him for a few hours but was observant and already noticed a lot about how he acted.
Phoenix made it to the shop before she did. He leaned against the wall of the shop, waiting for her. "Not my fault that you waited for me." He said with a smirk and a shrug. "Come on." Nix led her into the store, smiling at her. ---
Tess smiled back at Jay and gave him a small wave. She looked back at the two guys again. "Yeah." She shrugged, going with what the guys said. Tessa knew that she'd need to tell Jay what his friends thought. She blushed and bit her lip when Derek called her hot.
Nix rolled his eyes at her. "Whatever." He looked around at the movies. "Fine. Whatever. I may take a nap during that movie though." He told her. He didn't mind watching a movie that he didn't like just to be with her. Besides, he'd pick out a movie that she didn't like too to make it even. Phoenix smiled, watching her. ---
Tessa rolled her eyes at the guys. She smiled innocently at Jay when he walked over, grateful that he'd play along. She shifted, standing on her toes to whisper in his ear. She was quiet, making sure the other guys wouldn't eavesdrop or overhear. "I told them that I was just a friend of yours and they immediately assumed girlfriend.." She explained, biting her lip lightly.
Phoenix smiled and rolled his eyes at her. "What other movies?" He asked, looking over at her. Phoenix walked around, looking at other movies. He smiled, glad that Maya would rather watch movies than go to some party. ---
"Okay." Tessa whispered back. She smiled at him before looking back at the other guys. "Of course they're nosy, they haven't seen you in who knows how long." Tessa teased Jay. She typically didn't drink much, but a few beers with them or anything wasn't a big deal.
"Yeah. I think so. We have like 10 movies plus you have some more at your house." Phoenix replied with a shrug. He smiled lightly and took the movies from her. He went to the counter to pay to check them out. "Anywhere else we need to go?" He asked Maya.---
Tessa nodded. She got in the passengers seat of the car, putting on her seatbelt. She shifted so she could see Jay and kinda see into the backseat. She was glad that Jay got to meet up with his buddies, even if it meant that she had to tag along.
Phoenix was completely oblivious to the girls flirting. He paid for the rental of the movies and took the bag that the girl had put them in. "Sure." Nix nodded, walking outside with her. "Ice cream actually sounds really good right now." ---
Tessa smiled, following them inside. She rolled her eyes and stuck her tongue out at Jay. "Figures, you make me tell them." She said with a smirk. Luckily, on the way over she had come up with a believable story. "I was In the library reading a book. He was there and happened to be a little too close when I got angry at the book. I threw it and accidentally hit him in the head with it.." She admitted with a shy smile. "So I figured since he was cute and I did hit him in the head, I might as well ask him out as a way of saying sorry." She looked at Jay, hoping that was an okay story.
"What are you talking about?" Phoenix asked, still oblivious. He bit his lip and ran a hand through his hair. "I agree with the cute thing but she wasn't hitting on me." Nix protested. "Was she?" He asked, doubting himself. This is one reason why he needed Maya. She pointed out what he didn't notice. ---
Tessa smiled, watching him and the guys. "Yeah. You got a date. Then you got a second date, and a girlfriend out of it." She said with a smirk. She ran a hand through her auburn hair, glancing around the bar. She didn't think anyone would recognize her which was good.
Phoenix shook his head. "Me? The most awkward guy In the universe. You want me to just go up to a girl and ask for her number or something? That's a good way to make a fool out of myself." He argued, looking at her. He knew that she'd probably give in, knowing how shy he could be sometimes. ---
Tess bit her lip lightly, not having thought about the possibility of them asking that. "Maybe he's changed some. I don't know why. Ask him," she told the guys. She wished that she would've thought of that possibility before. Tessa technically couldn't date Jay, even if she wanted to because her father definitely wouldn't approve.
"And why can't I? Maybe I'm meant to be a loner all my life.." He teased with a smile. Phoenix walked beside her. "Okay. I'm almost the most awkward guy in the universe.. But honestly, there's nobody that I'm interested in or that I'd want to ask out.. " He corrected. He was technically lying. There was one girl he was interested in and she was walking right by him. "Anyone would be lucky to get to date you Maya. Even if it was just for a little while.."---
Tessa quietly thanked Jay when he handed her a beer. She smiled, trying not to laugh at Jay's reaction to his friends. She looked around the bar, just watching some of the different people that were there. She was still listening and paying attention to what the guys were saying though. Tess bit her lip lightly.
"You don't know that. Maybe that is my goal in life." Phoenix replied. He smiled back at her. "Yeah. But somebody will eventually. And if they hurt you, it's not my fault if they get beat up." He commented. They arrived at baskin Robbins. Nix pulled open the door and held it for her. ---
Tessa shrugged. "He's kinda cute. And likes to read. Other than that. I don't know." She said with a light smile, looking over at Jay. She took a swig of her beer, lost in thought. She honestly still didn't know that much about Jay and he didn't know that much about her.
"I'm really not. My skills just aren't in normal subjects like English or math." Phoenix answered with a smirk. He followed her inside. "Mint chocolate chip, duh. Just like always." He replied, smiling at her. "What're you gonna get?" He asked, even though he probably could guess the answer. ---
"Just a little bit. Like maybe this much." She said, holding up her thumb and index finger with less than an inch of space between them. Tessa rolled her eyes and went back to watching some of the other people in the bar. It was intriguing to her, watching how all these different people behaved and acted.
"Okay." Nix smiled faintly. He ordered double chocolate cookie dough ice cream for her and mint chocolate for him. He paid for the ice cream and handed Maya her ice cream cone. He licked the ice cream on his come and smiled. --
"No. We don't. He means that he has to get me home because I have to get up early tomorrow and I don't do well if I haven't slept." Tessa corrected. She glanced at Jay, noticing him mumble something under his breath. She knew that they really had to go back because of her curfew and so Jay wouldn't get in trouble.
Phoenix smiled. "You're welcome." He nodded a thanks to her for holding the door. He walked with her back toward her house, eating his ice cream. He looked around, lost in thought.---
Tessa stood up, smiling lightly. She let the guys hug her, knowing that it was okay because Jay trusted them. "I'll be good to him. Just as long as he does the same." She replied. Tessa looked at Jay and smiled.
"Huh?" Nix asked, tilting his head. "Oh. Nothing important." He said with a shrug and continued to eat his ice cream. Phoenix smiled at her. That happened often. He'd get distracted and lost inside his own head. ---
Tessa smiled. She got in the car, thanking Jay. She put on her seatbelt and looked at him. "They're pretty cool. They make you a lot less on edge." She replied with a shrug. "Sorry about the dating thing, they kinda assumed it and I went with it." Tess apologized, biting her lip.
"Yeah. I know. It's all the songs that are constantly playing in my head. They distract me." Nix smiled and shrugged. Phoenix followed her inside, finishing off his ice cream. "Why are you sighing? What's wrong?" He asked softly.---
"Okay." Tess nodded. She smiled faintly and watched outside while he drove. "Good timing." She commented. Tessa let him walk around and open the door for her, letting him act like a proper gentleman. She thanked him as she got out of the car.
"I know." Nix sighed, not really believing her. "Okay. But if anything's going on, you know you can tell me." He said gently, not going to pry. He knew that something was up with her but didn't know what that something was. Phoenix bit his lip. ---
Tessa smiled faintly. She walked into the quiet house, looking around. She wasn't sure where Jay's room was but guessed that it was somewhere near hers. Tess walked toward her room, thinking about everything that had happened today.
Phoenix wrapped his arms around her tightly, holding her and letting her cry. He listened to her say what was wrong and frowned. "It'll be alright, this'll all work out." He whispered. Nix lifted her off her feet and walked to the couch. He sat down, putting her in his lap. He continued to hold her. ----
"Okay." Tessa nodded. She smiled lightly at him. "Goodnight Jay." She said softly before opening the door and heading into her room, turning on the light. She bit her lip lightly and closed the door, sighing. She wasn't sure how she was going to do with him being there all the time. Tess changed out of her clothes into what she typically slept in, shorts and a shirt that was way too big for her.
