Crazy for Young Adult Books discussion

Suzy and I will be reading this sequel to Seraphina through the month of February. As it is quite long (and it has been on our TBR for some time) and we have many other books on the go, here is the reading schedule we will be trying to stick to.

Week 1 (MAR 1 - 7) Chapters 1-9
Week 2 (MAR 2 - 14) Chapters 10-18
Week 3 (MAR 15 - 21) Chapters 19-27
Week 4 (MAR 22 - 29) Chapters 28-36 plus Epilogue

I've read up to chapter 3, and I have to admit I really should have re-read Seraphina. I read it 3 years ago, and I really needed a refresher. Oh, well. I'm trudging through anyway.

I am only halfway through the first chapter but I agree that the author isn't doing a great job at reminding us what happened in the previous book.

I'm a bit confused as well. I had read Seraphina last year and now I don't really remember some things. I hope I start remembering as this book progresses.

Well I am only slightly behind, I just finished Chapter 8.

I feel the author (view spoiler)[ did a terrible job at reminding us of the events in book one. I also feel the character development is lacking. (hide spoiler)] and while I like that (view spoiler)[ she didn't waste anytime starting on her journey, I feel like the pacing is a bit crazy. It is almost as if too much is happening and the author didn't take the time to give any of it depth. I also think her quest has been a cake walk so far which seems unrealistic. (hide spoiler)]

Hope to finish Ch. 9 (and maybe more) today.

I'm done up to chapter 9.

I agree that (view spoiler)[ the author is doing a very poor job of reminding us what happened last book. (hide spoiler)] I loved that we (view spoiler)[ got started on the journey right away but I can't help feeling like the journey and character development are severely lacking in depth. Characters like Joaquin are introduced but not fleshed out. (hide spoiler)]

I feel like we are a quarter of the way through the book, but not much is gripping me. The potential is there with the half dragons and grotesques, Seraphina's mind garden. It all so unique, but the author doesn't seem to know how to make her world a gripping one, which I find sad. I think this book could have benefitted from multiple points of view -Gliselda and Kiggs, seraphina, and dame orka with the other half dragons. I think it'd give us more tocare about with the characters and build the world better.

I did like chapter 8 and 9 when we (view spoiler)[ finally got the story of why Jannoula is locked in the cottage and finally got some more backstory and character development. (hide spoiler)]

I am very curious to see where things go, and hope that we get more.

I'm up to chapter 17.

I like what's been developing in the last few chapters. We finally (view spoiler)[ met Jannoula, we know shes escaped her prision and has taken over the minds of half the ishtaari we've met so far. I can't help but wonder- does she really just want everyone to be together or does she have something else in mind? (hide spoiler)]

I love Phylophian- seeing dragons living in their own little undisturbed corner, Ishtaari being unafraid to live normal lives. I hope that can happen in the other regions as well. I'm sad that jannoula (view spoiler)[ got a hold of Abdo's mind and that he is so sick trying to fight her off. I hope things work out for him! (hide spoiler)]

I think I'm going to make a list of the grotesques in Seraphina's mind garden and what their real identity is. I find it hard to keep them al straight at times, but I do like that we've met almost everyone. I think theres only 2 we haven't met so far.

I hope the idea that (view spoiler)[ the saints were all Ishtaari gets fleshed out and isn't just left hanging. I also hope we get to know more about seraphina's saint (starts with a Y but I can't remember how to spell it offhand). It seems like Orma's research will lead to more, which I am curious about. I can't wait to see (view spoiler)[ Kiggs again, I'm hoping something happens where he doesn't have to marry Glisselda and can be with Seraphina. I also hope we get in contact with Orma soon. (hide spoiler)]

I see potential, lets just see if the rest of the book lives up to that potential

I just finished chapter 18.

I agree that it is good to see (view spoiler)[ Jannoula in the flesh and get an idea of where she is and what she is up to but I can't help but suspect she has nefarious motives for her actions. (hide spoiler)]

I am much less excited to see Kiggs again. For me (view spoiler)[ the romance has fizzled and really has no hold over my interest. I could honestly care less about what happens with the Kiggs, Selda, Phina triangle. (hide spoiler)]

I finished chapter 23 last night, and I have to admit that I have finally got into the story for the last few chapters. Crazy things are happening, and I can't wait to see how Seraphina unleashes her bound power.

I finished the book last night, and I am happy to say that I really enjoyed the book. I was worried at the beginning when I felt like I was floundering around to understand what was going on. I enjoyed the world building and the fleshing out of characters previously mentioned. So glad that I was able to participate in this read-along.
