Lily Ritterman-Pena This is where we are discussing our ideas.

Lily Ritterman-Pena HOW DOES YOUR WRITER BEGIN THE TOUR OF THE STORYWORLD?

Shannon Messenger starts the story in a boring way because of how predictable the story is. The plot is so predictable and the characters are very cliche.

Sydney Chong What point of view is you novel written in? Why do you think the writer chose this particular point of view?

The point of view in the book is first person but Messenger changes the narrator each chapter.

I think that Messenger used this POV to create mystery in the story by giving information to the reader that the characters doesnt know

Lily Ritterman-Pena What mood does the writer establish in any given scene? How does he or she establish that mood? Why does the writer choose a particular mood for that scene?

One scene is the scene on page 42. The mood in this scene is confusing and annoying. In this scene Vane gives Audra water to help her wake up, but once she is awake she informs him that he killed everyone. Then, Vane, who is the narrator in this chapter gets very confused and so does the reader. You do not know how people died until a later chapter. The writer shows mood by showing what the character is feeling.

Sydney Chong The mood in my scene is suspenseful, betraying, and begrudging. In this scene Audra goes to her mother to get help even though she resents Audra and blames her for her fathers death. Messenger creates this mood by presenting the tension and rivalry between their parental relationship

Lily Ritterman-Pena What is the tone of the speaker in a particular passage (identify the subject of the passage first, then the tone)? How does the writer establish this tone? Why is it important to understand this tone?

In the scene on page 91, the tone is annoyed. Audra is trying to train Vane to become a good sylph. Vane doesn't believe her at first because he thinks it sounds fake. Audra is annoyed with him and says things like "finally" and "scared as he should be". This is important because this is how she feels towards him throughout the book.

Sydney Chong What is real and what is fiction in your book? Be specific and give examples. What makes your book fit its genre?

the feelings in the plot are real, like how Audra feels guilt towards Vane, and how Vane is in love with Audra but he suppresses it (mostly). What is unreal is what they are, sylphs. Like the fact that they speak to the wind and control it and how some can communicate with birds and some can manipulate the left spirits of their loved ones. I think that this is too realistic for a fantasy book because although there are supernatural creatures the setting is a big part in fantasy and the setting in this book is realistic

Lily Ritterman-Pena Find a part of your novel that is left ambiguous. Describe what is ambiguous and why you think the writer left this part unclear.

The part where Audra says that Vane killed everyone is temporary ambiguous because Audra doesn't explain what he did. This is not revealed until a few pages later.

Sydney Chong Storyworld

this story takes place in the present in California. the history of the story is that Raiden became very powerful and took over the sylph kingdom and has to learn a new language to be the most powerful but no one will teach him so Vane has to learn all four languages and defeat Raiden. The sylphs value family, government, peace, and order.

Lily Ritterman-Pena Choices, Decisions, Consequences

At one point in the book, Vane has the choice to have two breakthroughs and be extremely weak or he could has one breakthrough but lose time training and learning Westerly. He chooses to have two breakthroughs and become very weak. His consequences are that he has more time to learn Westerly, he is very weak, he can't walk home on his own and Audra has to meet his parents.

Sydney Chong Mundane - how do the actions of the character contribute to our understanding of his or her story world

training

the actions of Vane and Audra that are mundane reveals their true nature, motivation, and history of the story and character.

Sydney Chong How does your novel end? Analyze the writer’s decisions

The novel does not end. In the novel one conflict is resolved but then another one turns up. Messenger attempted, and failed, to pull the reader in and encourage the reader to read onto the next book.
