Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments Cool! I'm planning on reading this book starting the 15th and (hopefully) finishing on the 27th. You want to check in on the 21st or so and see how we're doing on progress?

Krissy (krissystewart) | 3693 comments I'll have to read it sooner because I had to put it on hold in overdrive. But I didn't realize it became available literally the same day I put it on hold. So now I only have 8 days until it returns. So I'll keep my updates under spoiler tags.

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments Ah ok, sounds good. If I get through my other readings and have some time to kill, I'll jump into this book and do the reading I can. Whenever I get some reading in, I'll make sure to update it on here!

Krissy (krissystewart) | 3693 comments No rush. I didn't think the book would be available so quickly!

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments Ya, it's so weird how that works. Some books you get them right away and others, you're waiting for a long time. I'm pretty excited about reading this book. It'll be my first Dean Koontz book and I'm a huge Stephen King fan, so I'm interested to see how Dean Koontz writes his books.

Krissy (krissystewart) | 3693 comments I have read a few Koontz books. I am not a huge fan but I've enjoyed a couple of his books. I liked Odd Thomas. But he is a very wordy author. He loves his descriptions. He could spend 3 paragraphs on a description of a hotel door.

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments Hmm that'll be interesting. Sounds like I might be skimming a little bit over those parts. Hopefully it won't be too horribly wordy.

Krissy (krissystewart) | 3693 comments I started this audiobook this morning. I'm only about 21% in and so far Koontz is following his typical pattern. Lots and lots of overshare. He tends to just randomly go off into unnecessary details. For example:
Lets say the main character had to go to the bathroom. Most authors will just say he had to go and write that he got up and headed to the bathroom. Might even go into detail like if he had to walk down the hallway or what door the MC went into. But not Koontz. He would say MC had to go to the bathroom, then describe the feeling of a full bladder, then possibly talk about how long it's been since he went last, then describe the MC heading to the bathroom mentioning every piece of furniture he passes, details the hallway the MC walks down, maybe mention what decorations are on the wall, describes any family pictures the MC might walk by including who is in the picture and how they are related, what color the hallway carpet is, possibly the date the carpet was put in.... you get the picture.

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments wow, that is a lot of oversharing. I wonder if it's going to drag down the reading. :/ I'm just a wee bit ahead in my reading, so I might give it a try today to see how it goes.

Krissy (krissystewart) | 3693 comments That's just how he writes. He's a good author and some people really like that really wordy writing style. Unfortunately I'm not one of them. I get bored and my mind will start to wander. But despite that the story itself isn't bad. I'm curious to see where it goes

Krissy (krissystewart) | 3693 comments 63%~ It's starting to get pretty good

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments That's good :) I'm looking forward to it!

Krissy (krissystewart) | 3693 comments 82%~ (view spoiler)

Krissy (krissystewart) | 3693 comments Finished! I'm satisfied with the ending. But this was a typical Koontz book. A decent story and plot drowned under too much detail. About half way through the ending climax I was over it and was wishing it would hurry up and come to a conclusion. (view spoiler)

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments I'm starting the book tonight so hopefully we can start talking about the book, if there's anything worth talking about :) I'm only going to page 41, so I won't be diving it too deep yet.

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 483 comments Just got done with the first day's reading. At the beginning, he was a little wordy, but I'm starting to get into the background a little bit. I like how it's going back and forth between "the killer" and Marty's family. What's ironically funny is that I worked very close to Mission Viejo the past 3 years, so I know the area really well. I'm not sure if that's going to have much impact in the book or not, but it's nice to read a book where I actually know the area for once. :) I'm interested to see where this goes.
