Lynn (lynnad) | 17 comments I walk the dogs each evening after dinner to help walk off what I have eaten. The distance is only approx 3 Kilometres but it is almost all up really steep hills.

I have incorporated walking the dogs farther in the evening and it has helped me too. I only go about a mile a night.

Walking is really relaxing too. The dogs love it! How much is a kilometer? Is it like a Mile?

message 7: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (lynnad) | 17 comments 1 Kilometre = .62 of a mile so 3 kilometres = 1.86 miles.

That is a nice walk!

message 9: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (lynnad) | 17 comments It is not a bad walk Vicki, I have changed my profile photo to my driveway at my house. All walks start by walking up there, then hopefully one of the dogs will have a pee so I can catch my breath.

message 10: by Corinne (new)

Corinne (corinnebooks) I run for 30 minutes every morning of the week before getting to work, and 1 hour on saturdays. And sundays, it is just walk in the forest nearby (2 or 3 hours). I practice yoga at home 1 or 2 times a week (evening). I walk everywhere I can, I actually find the outdoors activities better as you get some fresh air, it helps, I feel good and punchy ...

Walking up hill will certainly strengthen your legs and make the benefits even better. I know you and the dogs must both enjoy it!

~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ (abbaschild7748) I've never been one to stick with traditional workouts. Like going to the gym and all that. I've tried. Even had a personal trainer, but just could never stay motivated. This is mainly cos I've always danced to stay fit & in shape. I use to dance professionally, with a group etc.. but after a few years and the older I got, I didn't like the traveling all the time. I wanted to be more settled. So I stopped. Fell into a bit of a rut, until I started to teach it part time again.

Now I do dance 5x's a week. Anything from 25-50 minute sessions. Each of those days I switch it up a bit to keep it fresh. (Especially when I'm doing a class session. But this type of excercise is great cos you can also do it at home)

But it's mainly just dancing anything from disco moves to modern jazz pop dance moves etc.. or a litte Ballet as well. It's fun. it keeps you motivated so you don't feel like you're working out. It works your whole body, great for your heart, endurance and burns calories like crazy. Also the older we get, dancing greatly reduces the risk of dementia. It helps keeps you mentally sharp.

I typically split my time with the classes & home, cos I also work part time. So a typical workout week for me is Mon-Thursday & Saturday. Sundays I don't dance. And Fridays I usually don't either, or I'll just do a small 15 minute session. It just depends.

ETA:
When I'm not adding any extra time in or not doing 2 sessions a day, typically this is what my excercise week looks like..

Monday- Video dance sync routins- 25-35 min. (full body)

Tuesday- Disco Dance- 35 min (full body)

Wednesday- Booty work- 30 min (these are dances for the sole purpose of working your butt, hips, thighs, lower back & belly)

Thursday -Dance Party- 45 min (Dances with mixture of disco, modern dance, jazz, pop, etc.. Full body)

Friday I'll either not dance this day, or do like 15 mins of light dance/stretch excercises.

Saturday Booty work 30 min, or Dance party-45min (sometimes both)

Sunday Rest :D

Sheba Hall (coolbreezeunlimited) I am a member of the gym where I work. I try to go there in the mornings before work and do the weight machines and if I can go after work, I will do some cardio. I have found that a good workout helps me sleep better at night. I am also trying to once again stop drinking sodas. When I stopped the first time, I lost some weight. It is true to what they say, "sodas do make people gain weight." I like hearing what others are doing. It is encouraging.

Yes I agree Sheba. Keep up the good work. I found that when I quit soda I slept a lot better as well. Also they say that diet soda is very addictive. They call it the new crack.

Lynn (lynnad) | 17 comments I walk the dogs 7 nights a week and go to the gym 3 mornings a week. I would go to the gym more often since it is just around the corner from work, problem is I have MS and I found that after a year of getting in early every day I had a relapse so I'm trying to find a balance between keeping fit and not aggravating my MS.

All seems to be good at the moment so I may have got the balance.

I am glad you found the balance. It is important to have moderation in every thing. I hope this group will help you with your health.

message 18: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) I switch up my routine every 6 weeks, but it usually looks like this:

Sunday: kettlebell training, or maybe metabolic strength training with light dumbbells, or a circuit with kettlebells, sandbag and other toys
Monday: cardio/agility training, and if the weather is good, I might go to the park with my husband and kick around a soccer ball and do a spot of hula hooping
Tuesday: Spinning on my spin bike and reformer Pilates at a studio
Wednesday: Hiking or walking with my husband
Thursday: Strength training (upper body) at the gym, yoga at home
Friday: Strength training (lower body) at the gym
Saturday: Barre workout at home

This year, I also want to get back into doing some heavy bag (boxing) workouts, and incorporate more yoga and Tai Chi into my routine.

Mine's simple - I do what coach tells me 5 out of the 7 weekdays, and do a long run on my own on Saturday. But for that month of free time during the summer when I'm off from track:

Monday - dance

Tuesday (my relax day) - easy flexible stuff

Wednesday - short run 2-3 miles (maybe a 5k) at a good, strong pace; the goal is to be dripping wet with sweat when I'm done

Thursday - dance because there is nothing more fun in the world

Friday - swimming

Saturday - more yoga, but this time the advanced really flexible, really muscular type stuff

Sunday - SLEEP!

The thing about dancing and yoga that I like is that its so broad a... thing, that you can customize it to your personality.

The other thing is, spend time with your family (especially pets), and I'm not talking movie night - I'm talking football (american or not) in the backyard, wash the car and spray each other with the hose, go down to the beach, etc. Because happiness makes people energized and ready to move, which makes them move which makes them ultimately live longer

Nomagugu Chelsie (penguin93) Yeah I've trained running but I run out of breath faster than my gran!
I've found dancing works for me and used to do ballroom for years but with work I don't have time, so I switched to Pilates and yoga when I can(which lasted about a month)
Now I try for atleast 30minutes of work out time at home daily.
Squats(jump squats) lunges, sit ups, mountain climbers and plank(rarely).

message 26: by Vicki, Author (new)

Vicki (vickigoodwin) | 103 comments Mod
That all sounds good to me. I'll bet ballroom dancing was so much fun. Dancing sure is a without. You have a good idea with all the different exercises!

message 27: by Nomagugu (new)

Nomagugu Chelsie (penguin93) Yeah it was a blast.

But my body is responding much less to my current routine. That's why I feel it's not enough.

I've avoided gym and using weights cause I don't want to get too toned, I want to have a nice shape and a flat belly without it looking like I worked too hard for it. My body tends to get uber muscular easy.

Plus I'm a major foodie so I need all the exercise I can get. Any suggestions?

message 28: by Vicki, Author (new)

Vicki (vickigoodwin) | 103 comments Mod
I have never worked on building muscle by using weights. I know that my friend uses all kinds of weights and a kettle bell. But she is working on lots of muscle. She does those competitions but not burly types. She is very toned and petite.
Walking is the best for me, I tried to do Zumba but it was too hard on my hips and back. :(

message 29: by Nomagugu (new)

Nomagugu Chelsie (penguin93) Maybe Yoga? For your back (I'm not completely sure how yoga works but I feel like it would rather help strengthen you back unlike the weights that would take a toll on it.

It would be difficult for me to find a kettle bell, they aren't very popular here.(I live in Botswana, it's just above South Africa) I'd have to join gym and I like the idea of gym but actually going... Working out when there's people... Other people... I can't seem to bring myself to do it.
I'll go dancing, I can talk to a large group and I've even been on stage a few times but working out infront of people I just can't seem to do. :(

You are very brave to go up in front of people and give talks and go on stage!! I am not comfortable working out in a crowd either.

I agree Yoga might be a good thing to Yoga. There is a free Yoga book on amazon that you might could pick up and give a try.

and

Those are the links. I hope they are enough information for you to base a decision :) Without spending a lot of money.

Nomagugu Chelsie (penguin93) Lol oh gosh I'm quiet talkative so a room full of people is not a problem. Though I get very nervous when I have to sing on stage but I've only done it a few times, scary stuff but a shot before a performance tends to help

LOL ME too! Of course if I were to attempt to sing on a stage the room would empty like an emergency evacuation!!!!! LOL

Seriously What kind of music do you sing? I think that having that talent is awesome!!

It's quite fun once I get past the stage fright. I've done backing vocals for a particular RnB/HipHop artist. Apart from that I've done a few studio tracks for friend but singing is not something I'm looking to persue it professionally rather I prefer writing but being in Botswana and not being able to travel as much as I'd like to I have very little motivation. But I try to keep up with my blogs and write anytime inspiration hits :)

Hi Nomagugu

I listen to audio books whilst I am at the gym. That way I am in my own little world and can ignore that there are people around me. I have been going to a little over a year and have met some really nice people to chat to so it gets easier.

Maybe audio books could work for you.

Nomagugu's right. Yoga is amazing for strength without hurting any tender areas. I would recommend going to a class, though because if you do happen to have any pain, then the instructor will tell you what poses would be good for you.

I usually read the book first then buy the audio when it comes out. Since I have the Kindle app on my iPad mini I buy from Amazon and they sell the audio books for the eBooks that you have already bought at a fraction of the price as in usually between $2.00 - $4.00 rather than $20 - $30.

I forgot to say that you are looking for the words Whispersynch Ready on a book you buy cos that means there is an audio version. Aestas book blog has a link from the Current .99 sales button at the top of the page, once you are in the current sales click the AudioBook upgrade links then login to Amazon, it will go through all the books you have bought on Amazon that have an audio version.
