message 25: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 53 comments I just finished Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon. It is a book about an 18 year old girl who has a disease in which she cannot leave her house. She is allergic to the world. Kind of like "THe Boy in the Bubble" story. As she watches out her bedroom window she sees a new family move in with an 18 year old boy. Of course she falls in love and there are some cute scenes with them but it was kind of meh to me.

Now I am reading two very different books for a religion challenge.

The first one is The Bonobo and the Atheist: In Search of Humanism Among the Primates by Frans de Waal. It is an interesting read by a known primatologist. Through DNA it is known that humans fall between chimps and bonobos. In studying the bonobo he sees morality without religion.(they are more sexually free than us, lol) BTW, he does not bash religion.

The second one is Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome: A Memoir of Humor and Healing by Reba Riley. This is about a young woman who was raised very strict Pentecostal. She had a strong faith but when she was in college she started getting sick whenever she entered the church. Flash forward to age 29. She has been on and off sick and there is no physical reason for it. She decides to find her path back to religion by going to 30 churches by the time she is 30. It's an interesting journey for her. I just wish in went into more detail about the religions she visited.

Julia (juliace) Currently reading Treachery in Death for a challenge. It's a favorite of mine and a re-read so I should be through it rather quickly.

Treachery in Death (In Death, #32) by J.D. Robb

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I'm going to overdo it (in the mood) and post the rest of my February plans

I'm re-reading (for a group read, and also to review finally)
Flowers in the Attic (Dollanganger, #1) by V.C. Andrews

I'm still at the first half of, but enjoying, my January bucket list book, The Thorn Birds

I started reading the historical romance The Wolf and the Dove right now for two reasons - one, because it fits a goal in a group challenge, and second, because I have a goal of reading some of the author's books this year.

Books I want to read before the month ends (but may not make):

Firefight by Brandon Sanderson - it's a buddy read, but also the second book in the series before the new one comes out.
The Phantom of the Opera - Group read, but also because it's a classic I've been meaning to get to.
Bedlam, Bath & Beyond - Has to read soon for a group game/challenge
The Kite Runner - group read
The Alienist - group read
Dark Currents - group read
The Bone Factory - picked now because of a game challenge

Personal books I want to read for personal challenges, but aren't group/buddy reads or challenges -

Ammie, Come Home - part of personal challenge to re-read a lot of Barbara Michaels this year and review
Blubber - want to re-read some Blume classics and review
The Grave - part of personal goal to read and review a lot of Pike this year
The Pearl - classic I've been meaning to read
Love, Death and Tea - this one is halfway done, I need to wrap it up

Mrs. Mike (Mrs. Mike, #1) by Benedict Freedman

message 43: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 53 comments I am finishing up a couple of buddy reads and group challenges and then on to start a new one tomorrow.

I finished I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings which was very good. It is about a black woman growing up in segregated Arkansas in the 40's and 50's.

Then I finished Sworn to Silence which is a mystery set in Amish country. I liked it but the murderer was very predictable. No surprises for me.

Then for another buddy read I finished Anna and the French Kiss. Some YA books can be read and enjoyed by adults. This was not one of them.

I will read more of A Little Life before my new weekly challenge starts.
