A lot of people listen to audiobooks while running. I don't normally like audiobooks, but maybe with the right voice reading it I would like it. Probably someone British.
Anyhow, do you run and 'read'? Do you recommend anything specific?

Chris (minos157) I find non fiction or something you've read before, because if you lose focus on the book for a minute it isn't a huge deal since you either know the book already, or with non fiction you just miss a piece but not a plot line.

Amanda Myhrberg I tend to like fantasy books while running just b/c it transports me a little bit into a state of mind where I'm not thinking about running. I just started Stephen King's The Dark Tower Series Book 1 today. At first it was hard to focus but once I got through the "Oh crap I'm running" phase it was easy sailing.

Emma Shields | 6 comments I just finished Bossypants on my run today. It's my second memoir. And I have to say they are my favorite for running. There is plenty of comedy and drama. Listening to some of my favorite stories is my 2nd fave.

Roxana (luminate) | 6 comments I love listening to audiobooks while I run. I agree with Chris, that finding a book you can tune out of for a moment with fewer repercussions is helpful. (A re-read, or nonfiction. I also like short stories for the same reason.) Finding a few readers you really enjoy is also important (my favorite reader of all time is Simon Prebble; I also love the work of Kate Reading and Simon Vance).

The app Overdrive is great - it's the app many library systems use for their e- and audiobooks. Audiobooks from the library are great cause, well, they're free, so no downside to trying out a title and never finishing it. And Overdrive works really well (they had a recent update that screwed everything up, but they fixed it much, much faster than I'd expected, and other than that incident, I've never had a technical problem with it, including running it at the same time as my various run-tracking apps and charity miles).

Sara Dee | 9 comments I listen to all kinds of audio books while exercising....usually non fiction. I enjoy the Great Courses Audio series of lectures. each lecture usually runs 30 minutes. i am currently listening to a series on the origins of mythology from all over the planet. Last one i listened to was on the legends of King Arthur. Really fun stuff. I use Audible...and occasionally YouTube.

i feel like an idiot because i didn't even THINK the library would have audio books. Of course they would. So thank you for that.

Sara Dee | 9 comments oh! i also really enjoy listening to radio show renditions of fantasy books. Usually done by BBC one. Performed by big names. They are quite a great time!

Also! I find that most books, fiction and non, that are read by the author are a great time.

Nora | 3 comments I used an audiobook while running for the first time during a half marathon and I found I liked it a lot. It was really just there for noise anyway. I don't use music for pacing, just as a distraction. I used Harry Potter as a test since I've practically memorized it so I didn't really have to pay attention to it. Now I also use Hunger Games because those are great to listen too, and I just downloaded Divergent so I'm going to try it next.

Katie (kehkd2) | 3 comments I find I do better with 'fluff' books, fiction that I can turn out for a little bit, or go a few days without listening to, and have lighter plot lines. Children and Teen novels are usually where I start when I'm looking for a new one, but I'm currently listening to a Janet Evanovich romance and that is going well-there are several humorous spots where I've burst out laughing, and there isn't any descriptions of sex to make me blush if I'm at the gym. I've also listened to the first two Andy Carpenter mystery books on audio and they went well.
